    Thumbs up Z87X-UD3H eSata Issues

Pls help, those with z87x-ud3h board using the rear eSATA ports.

Tried searching but I couldn't find clear descriptions on the 3 different Marvell drivers from GB's Z87X-UD3H drivers site:
Marvell Storage Utility (4.1.0.2013), Marvell SATA Controller Driver (1.0.0.1061), and Marvell Preinstall Driver (1.2.0.1035). I think I don't need the per install driver as I already have Win7 x64 installed. For Marvell Storage driver, I didn't install it yet as I read someone suggest that their not good.
So far I've only installed Marvell SATA Controller, and also the later Marvell mv91xx v1.2.0.1035.

With this, I'm trying to use my eSATA ports at the back panel but every time I attach the eSATA cable, everything seems to drag & slow down (i.e. mouse barely moves). It immediately goes back to normal as soon as I detach the cable. In the BIOS (FW 7a), I have Marvell SATA forced to eSATA and in AHCI mode for GSATA Controller. Though I already tried AUTO, nothing changed.

Is there anything connected to either of the Gsata3 ports?
If yes, this is the problem when also trying to use the eSata ports.
From page 11 in your mobo user manual:
    MarvellŪ 88SE9172 chip:
    • 2 x SATA 6Gb/s connectors (GSATA3 6/7) or 2 eSATA 6Gb/s connectors on the back panel, supporting up to 2 SATA 6Gb/s devices
    * Use either the GSATA3 6, 7 connectors or the eSATA connectors at a time.
    • Support for RAID 0 and RAID 1
Are you using an external hard drive in an enclosure?
If yes, what is the model number and brand names for the hard drive and enclosure?

Hey profJim. Nope, nothing is connected to the Gsata3 (grey) Marvell ports, all 5 drives are in the Intel SATA3 ports. Yes, I'm aware they are shared, w/c is why I left the internal GSATA ports vacant so I can use the external ports. These are my drives and their respective enclosures. (They work well in my older PC but with a JMicron PCI controller card.)

Have you tested to see if the issues occur when each of your external drives are connected, one at a time?
What are the model numbers for the generic and Startech enclosures?

Searial numbers don't help, model names or numbers are needed.
Do you have one of these docking stations? HDD Docking Stations | StarTech.com
    If yes, which model number?
Do you have a model name or number for your generic Astone enclosure?

I have a HighPoint RocketU docking station that uses a usb 3.0 cable connection.
This setup works well with my HighPoint 1022A usb 3.0 HBA add-in controller card on my older P35 system.

This is the Startech: Amazon.com : StarTech.com eSATA USB to SATA Hard Drive Docking Station for Dual 2.5 or 3.5in HDD : Electronics

For the Astone, it really has no other information on the case. Perhaps one of the basic China-made enclosures, though it's sturdy and works well in my other PC. Unfortunately it's only USB2.0 and eSATA.

    For the SATADOCK22UE:
    • Interface: USB 2.0 & eSATA
    • Type and Rate: USB 2.0 - 480 Mbit/s and SATA I (1.5 Gbps)

You might need to test with using the most recent Marvell controller, with and without the Marvell driver.
The Gigabyte Marvell downloads might not be the most recent versions available.
I think that the Marvell pre-install drivers are only required if you want to enable Marvell raid mode.
I don't know if your bios has any specific settings for the Marvell Gsata3/Esata hardware.

Yeah, I have installed the 2nd to the last Marvell SATA drivers (1.02.1035), posted in OC.net. The latest (v1.0.2.1036) is said to be for Windows 8, so I didn't install it.

Could it be related to iRST? I'm about to try uninstalling iRST (I have the latest too installed: 12.7.1.1000) and test again.
Anyway, I see an issue when copying large files with iRST. At the start of copying, file transmission is quite fast but then it slows down after a while, even down to kB/s rates, forcing me to stop the transfer. Prior to starting the copy process, I notice in iRST that it shows SATA Transmission = 6Gb/s for the internal drive, but when the slow down happens, I check iRST again and soon it changes this transmission rate to 1.5Gb/s. Obviously this happens only when copying large files (i.e. 4GB up), because copying smaller files are quite fast and I guess by the time it starts to slow down, the copy has already finished.

I don't think that iRST will affect the Marvell Gsata or Esata performance in any way.
An interesting test would be do use an accessory eSata bracket to test your external drive performance.
Naturally this would require you to use one or two Intel sata3 or Marvell Gsata3 motherboard ports.
