    Default x79-ud3 4-way R9 290 power requirement question

    Hello,
Can my ud3 board support 4-way crossfire of R9 290s?
What would happen if the cards would like to pull 75w from the pci-e lanes?
The board was completely ok with a bunch of 5870s but they don't pull 300w each
The heat will not be an issue as the system will be water cooled.

    Default some clarification

My assumption is that since a card(x4) can pull 10w 3.3v and 65w 12v it is quite a bit more than two yellow cables going into the mobo can handle or the molex connectors themselves. Powered risers would do the trick but that would ruin the aesthetics and probably cause instability.

Am I missing something? How much load can the mobo take safely?

If you checked the specs of your board's download page, you would find this:

Support for 4-Way/3-Way/2-Way AMD CrossFireX™/NVIDIA SLI technology.

From there, your PSU is the important factor. That is what?

Your statement, "... two yellow cables going into the mobo can handle or the molex connectors themselves. is telling us nothing.

my psu should not be an issue. I have two 700w gold rated be quiet e9 series psus @230v ac (Finland/Europe).

This is my math, and I'm not comfortable with it: (R9 290s)4x65w =260w
(pins on the mobo 24 pin header)2x9Ax12V=216w

44w more than the molex mini-fit jr connector pins(2) are rated to handle.

The 4x10w draw from 3.3v line will not heat things up if it even occurs.
