    Good morning profJim!

    I hope I don't seem like I've gone renegade!

I increased the vcore by 5 clicks to 1.38125V and set the multi to 9.5 and the FSB to 411. Everything else I kept the same.

Here is a screenshot after 9.5 hours:

    Socket 771 Mod Xeon X5460 GA-P35-DS3L Overclock-3-9-9-5hours-jpg

    Am I doing it right?
    GA-EP45-UD3P 1.0, Intel Xeon X5470, 4x2GB Kingston HyperX DDR2 1066, NVidia Geforce 8800GTS 512, Kingston V300 240GB, Noctua NH-U12P with 2x Noctua NF-P12 Push-Pull, Corsair HX520W, Antec P182, Windows 7 64-bit

    EXCELLENT, looking good!!
Going rogue? Obviously the computer gods are looking favorably on you.
Your cpu and core temperatures look good with TjMax = 85o(C).
You must be feeling lucky because you have HWiNFO logging enabled.

I'll comment on your previous posts tomorrow, but right now I'll share some memory kit information.

I went to Amazon.co.uk to see what they had for ddr2 2x2GB memory.
There were too many memory kits for laptops (sodimm), registered or buffered memory, and ddr3 memory so I refined the Amazon search using:
    • g.skill f2 ddr2 2x2gb memory
    • komputerbay pc2 ddr2 2x2gb desktop memory

Some kit prices were in the £60 - £90 price range and there were some Komputerbay quad kits (4x2GB) for about £135.
I have never heard of Komputerbay memory before and you'll need to do some homework to see if their memory is good or not.

Check out the G.Skill kits, make a list of the kits with their model numbers that interest you and post the list in the G.Skill-Tweaktown forum and ask G.Skill-Mat which of their 2x2GB 800MHz or 1066MHz kits are compatible with your motherboard. The last time I checked the G.Skill web site, there no longer was any information about their DDR2 kits.
Back when DDR2 memory was king, G.Skill memory was one of the most popular and trouble-free kits in the Gigabyte forum.

Many 800MHz kits that are rated for 4-4-4-12 timings will overclock to 1066MHz using 5-5-5-15 timings.
1066MHz kits rated for 5-5-5-15 timings can often be run using 4-4-4-12 timings.
I've found that many of these kits can run with 4-4-4-12 timings up to about 875MHz or possibly a bit higher.
My Kingston HyperX 1066MHz memory and my OCZ Reaper 1066MHz memory were both stable running 8GB at 876MHz and 844MHz respectively with 4-4-4-10 timings. With my Q9650 now running at 4.0GHz and FSB = 445MHz, the OCZ Reaper memory is stable at 890MHz with 5-4-4-12 timings. Naturally, YMMV.

    8GB is nice.
Right now I have two browsers open with a total of 112 tabs, along with numerous other open programs where windows Task Manager shows 98 running processes. Memory in use is 4600MB with 3600MB of free memory. My swapfile usage is only 65MB.

BTW, I found the following OCZ Reaper 1066MHz information on the OCZ forum:
The reaper and platinum PC2-8500 parts use the same IC's so any version or combo of those will work. The only thing you have to keep in mind is the voltage. For some period of time the reaper 8500 parts were rated at 2.3V and at another point 2.1V. Mixing these kits is a bad idea. If you run the 2.3V kits at 2.1V they will be unstable and if you run the 2.1V parts at 2.3V they will fail.
    and
Everything produced in 2008 that is rated at 1000 MHz and higher will be rated at 2.1 - 2.2V. We no longer have 2.3V requirements. So yea the 2.3V is older (pre Dec. 2007 they would have to be)
If you're interested, you can view or download the specs for my Kingston HyperX memory at https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/...0D2T1K2_4G.pdf. These specs are similar to other higher end ddr2 1066MHz kits. Kingston also offered a nearly identical HyperX kit with normal height heat spreaders.

    Thanks for the info profJim!

I looked for HyperX memory on ebay but couldn't find any :( I'll definitely look into G.Skill though!

System is still running strong at 3.9 - 13.5 hours now :D

Should I increase the vcore 5 clicks again and try and hit the big 4.0?!

Make sure that you save your 3.90GHz bios settings as a bios profile NOW!!

5 clicks higher will have your cpu vcore = 1.41250 volts, which might be a bit higher than you need for 4.0GHz.
As long as your temperatures aren't too high, you should be good to go.
If 4.0GHz is stable, you can always try lowering the cpu vcore one step at a time and repeat your extended stress test.

I'd like to see a LinX 5 loop stress test using 1536MB or 1792MB of ram.
I don't know if you can test with 2048MB of ram when you only have 4GB of memory.
When you test with higher amounts of memory, LinX and/or IBT will give you slightly higher scores.
I've found that LinX gives slightly higher GFlops scores than IBT.
If the GFlops scores are fairly close, this is a pretty good indication that cpu vcore is adequate.

    9.5 x 421MHz technically will give you 3.9995GHz.

    Have fun!!

I save all my BIOS profiles before I start each test :)

Do you think I should increase less than 5 clicks? If so, what to?

My Q9650 system is currently using 1.38750 for 4.005GHz.
1.40000 volts might work for you, but you might need a bit more voltage.
The best I could do on my system was 4.14GHz (9x460) and I think that my quick and dirty test used cpu vcore = 1.42500 volts.

Don't forget that this is my best 4.0GHz LinX test result:

System keeps freezing when I try to load windows at 421/422 FSB, 9.5 multi at 1.41250V.

Do you think this is a RAM issue?

    What should I try next?

Based on what the Crucial reply was in your post in their forum, it might be caused by your ram.
Try loosening your ram timings from 5-5-5-18 to 6-5-5-20 or 6-6-5-20.
From your in-progress screen-shot in post #133, it looks like the DIMM voltage is already set to 1.9 or 2.0 volts.

I've got it set to +0.0 in the BiOS but it reads as 1.9 :/
Don't know what to do about that. I'm just going for a haircut but will try loosening the timings when I get back.

Another test you can try is to see if your P35-DS3L can boot with FSB = 422MHz:

    Use 9.0 x 422MHz = 3.785GHz.

    Your memory will still be at 2.0 x 422 = 844MHz.
Your cpu core voltage will probably need to be one or two clicks higher than your stable 3.90GHz cpu core voltage.

It's also possible that your 4.0GHz cpu core voltage will need to be even higher than 1.41250 volts.

I don't know what the maximum safe voltage is for your Xeon cpu.

Some use to say that up to 1.45000 volts was the maximum safe voltage for C2D or C2Q processors.

For everyday use, I want to be lower than 1.40000 volts, and the lower the better.
