I'm glad to hear that your cooling setup is doing better.

I inspected the bottom surface of my Noctua NH-C12P down draft cpu air cooler and in the right light, the base has a uniform semi-circular machined surface. Moving the tip of my finger nail perpendicular to these machined lines, it felt much coarser than I expected and I assume that the designers did this intentionally.

Smile Re: Socket 771 Mod Xeon X5460 GA-P35-DS3L Overclock

Unfortunately the 4-4-4-12 settings didn't like the Large FTTs either...:/

    Socket 771 Mod Xeon X5460 GA-P35-DS3L Overclock-4-4-4-12-1-hour-21-fail-jpg

Failed after 1 hour 21 minutes.

    (TjMax = 85C)

    Better quality: View image: 4 4 4 12 1 hour 21 fail Large

Looking at the temps though - am I right in thinking that's a big difference for the better?

What changes do you recommend this time Master Jim?!

Maximum RealTemp core temperatures (oC) from:
    • 4 days ago: 81 - 75 - 69 - 69
    • current: --- 70 - 66 - 68 - 68

It looks like your new TIM application is much better.

Move you memory in slots #1 and #3 to memory slots #2 and #4.
Move you memory in slots #2 and #4 to memory slots #1 and #3.
Rerun the large FFT test for 3 - 4 hours.
If there are no errors, follow up with Blend test for 3 - 4 hours.

If there are still Prime95 errors, see if you can lower VTT from 1.36 to 1.34 volts.

Unhappy Re: Socket 771 Mod Xeon X5460 GA-P35-DS3L Overclock

I swapped the memory in slot #1 to slot #2 and the memory in slot #3 to slot #4
and I swapped the memory from slot #2 to slot #1 and the memory in slot #4 to slot #3

The Large FTT test failed after 2 minutes:

    Socket 771 Mod Xeon X5460 GA-P35-DS3L Overclock-4-4-4-12-ram-swap-2min-fail-jpg

    (TjMax = 85C)

Better quality: View image: 4 4 4 12 RAM swap Large 2min fail

I will now try lowering VTT to 1.34 and see if that helps. I have been waiting about 15 mins after shutdown and then 15 minutes after startup to start the next tests and was just wondering if waiting after shutdown makes a difference?

I'm surprised at how much worse your results were by swapping the memory module positions.

Waiting 15 minutes after you shut your system down lets it cool off a bit but I don't see this a helpful or necessary step.

My system has a lot of programs running in the background and it usually takes 12 - 15 minutes after booting for Task Manager to display my normal processes and thread counts.

Just 'finished' testing at VTT 1.34 as it failed after 16 minutes:

    Socket 771 Mod Xeon X5460 GA-P35-DS3L Overclock-vtt-1-34-16-min-fail-jpg

    (TjMax = 85C)

Better quality: View image: VTT 1 34 16 min fail

Not waiting that extra 15 minutes will save me lots of time when running tests so thanks for that :)

What's next on the list to try? I can try switching RAM modules from 1 to 3 and 2 to 4?

Try running the Large FFT test with only two memory modules (2 x 2GB) from one of your kits in the #1 and #3 slots.

Another useful test might be to test 8GB of memory with 5-5-5-18 timings with the 2.00B and/or 2.00D memory multipliers and somewhat lower DRAM voltage. This will lower the demands on the motherboard's memory controller.

If it makes you feel any better, my Q9550/EP45-UD3P has stability issues above 3.60GHz.

I had a much easier time overclocking my Q9650/P35-DS4 system.

I just might try moving my Q9650 to the E45-UD3P and the Q9550 to P35-DS4.

I have some doubts about my Q9550 as the former owner was running it at 3.70GHz with nearly all AUTO settings and the over-volted bios settings might have taken a toll on the cpu or possibly the motherboard.

If worse comes to worse, I still have an E6850 3.0GHz C2D cpu that I should be able to o/c with up to 1.50 volts.
From what I've read, this cpu is normally lucky to reach 3.90GHz.

I still need to try a few more things to see if I can get my Asus P5Q Premium motherboard to post before I swap around my processors.

Arrow Re: Socket 771 Mod Xeon X5460 GA-P35-DS3L Overclock

I decided to try the 8GB RAM tests first since I don't feel I can go back to 4GB of RAM haha

    5-5-5-18 2.00B settings failed after 15 minutes :(

    View image: VTT 1 34 5 5 5 18 fail 15 mins

(I tried to upload a screenshot but I've reached my forum data limit apparently)

I'll try 2.00D and see if it makes a difference...

*Just noticed I forgot to lower the DRAM Voltage... What do you recommend I set it to and I'll re-test 2.00B

Try increasing tWR (Write to Precharge Delay) by +1 so that it is 4 higher than tWTR (Write to Read Delay) in Memset.
Check out Tweakers.fr - Some timings explication for some memory timing definitions.

Make sure that DRAM Performance Enhance is set to Standard and that you don't have it set to Turbo.

It seems that Dram voltage = 2.00 or 2.10 works best with our HyperX memory, AUTO might work OK.

I'm not aware of a user limit for posting images in the forum.
Send me a PM with a link to a screenshot of the error message that you get when you try to attach an image to a post.

I use the free Dropbox file sharing website to store my uncompressed high quality images and I use the forum editor's Insert Image option to link to jpg, jpeg, png or gif images that are in my Dropbox Public folder. You can link to as many of these file formats as you want in one post.

You can't do this with your file sharing service because the linked to address does not end with one of the allowed file formats.

I frequently link to images that I find in google image searches.

You can also link to any images on the web where the linked-to address ends in one of allowed file formats.

The 4GB test is only temporary to see if 8GB is causing the problems.

    I raised TWR by +1 in BIOS - I hope that's ok.

For the previous tests, Performance Enhance has been set to Standard and the last test had a DRAM Voltage of 1.9V.

Here's hoping we can make some progress today!

P.S. Here is a screenshot of the upload limit: Socket 771 Mod Xeon X5460 GA-P35-DS3L Overclock-limit-png

P.P.S. Dropbox free accounts no longer come with a public sharing folder so I couldn't get it to work for me but I just figured out how to do it via google drive - took me a while though and long enough for the above settings to fail the large FTT test!
