Luke, keep in mind that you might need to test with MCH Reference settings that use higher values than the default 0.760 setting (with VTT = 1.20).

Another option is to use a lower cpu multiplier, such as 9.0 x 428MHz = 3.852GHz, where it might be easier to find a stable setup.

Years ago it was pretty easy to overclock a Q9550 and EP45-UD3P system with 2 x 2GB of ram with an FSB up to 460 - 475MHz and it got a bit more involved as you got closer to 500MHz or higher.

Thumbs down Re: Socket 771 Mod Xeon X5460 GA-P35-DS3L Overclock

No luck with Performance enhance = Standard and tRD = 9:

I didn't get a chance to test anything else last night but will try lowering the multiplier and using higher MCH Reference settings.

With Performance Enhance = Standard your primary memory timings are 5-7-7-23 which is very loose.
This isn't a problem but these settings will lower overall memory performance.

It would be interesting to see if your Large FFT results are any better by only changing the cpu multiplier to 8.0x.
In this test your maximum cpu speed will be 8.0 x 408 = 3.264GHz which is only 4.3% faster than the standard cpu speed.
The 408MHz FSB is about 22.5% higher than the standard 333MHz FSB.

A small positive step today, my Q9550 at 3.655 GHz ran the Prime95 Large FFT test for 7 hours with no errors.

The system has been up continuously for 17 hours today with no problems.

Cpu Vcore = 1.35000 volts and nice core temperatures with LinX and Prime95.

Update: Q9550 at 3.655 GHz - Prime95 Blend test ran for 21 hours with no errors.

Core temperatures during the test were 55o - 64o(C) with ambient temperatures from 21o - 28o(C).

My main question involves your memory kit, is it on Corsair's compatibility list for your motherboard or in the EP45T-UD3P QVL list?

Which bios version are you using?

Have you checked for a modded or beta bios in the GIGABYTE Modified Bios or http://forums.tweaktown.com/gigabyte...beta-bios.html threads in the TT Gigabyte forum?

In the Upgrading RAM in EP45T-UD3P to 2x4GB DDR3-1600 thread, the OP had difficulty getting a compatible memory kit from G.Skill.

If you use the forum's Advanced Search feature, you can search using EP45T Keyword and the Search Titles Only option to get a list of 163 threads, where the most useful threads will have at least 10 - 30 or more replies.

In the recent http://forums.tweaktown.com/overcloc...-settings.html thread I posted the following:

    From a web search, here is a screen-shot using EP45T-Extreme, Q9650 @ 4.617GHz and 4GB of memory at 1640MHz.

    Check out the EXTREME screen-shots by dinos22: [Team.AU]XFire HD4870X2, E8600, Gigabyte EP45T-EXTREME, Corsair DDR3 + Skulltrail fun
Well my current system is the mentioned EP45T-UD3R and the same Corsair Vengeance DDR3 1600C9 2x4GB.
I've just got a bunch of Xeon E5410s (will be reselling them), so I tried it in my system, and would you believe - I still have the FSB wall at 465Mhz...
I don't even know what to think, the duals are certainly easier on the mobo, so it doesn't look like the mobo itself can't handle it, but I've just ran out of ideas when nothing at all helps.

RAM isn't in QVL but no surprises there since that list is so short. If it's running stable with FSB in 400-450Mhz range and is even semi stable at 450Mhz with 1:4 ratio (RAM at 1800Mhz 9-9-9-24), I don't see a reason why the same RAM can't be stable clocked at 1200-1500Mhz 9-9-9-24 with 465Mhz bclk and doesn't even post 1 Mhz above that no matter the ratio. There isn't much left when we exclude CPU, voltages, MCH load/potential (quad vs dual), clock skew and timings as the possible suspects, so frankly I'am just baffled...

There doesn't seem to be any modded bioses for EP45T-UD3R as far as I can tell, I've tried several official ones but the older ones proved to be even less stable (same FSB wall but won't POST with RAM at 1800Mhz).<style id="pageBrightnessCustomCSS">body{zoom:106%!import ant;}</style>

My preference is to use the memory search tools on the memory vendor's site to find memory kit compatibility.

Does Corsair test newer memory kits with older motherboards that are EOL? Probably not.

I've never heard of an FSB wall with EP45 models.
As I recall, back then, P45 overclocks with DDR3 memory used 2 x 2GB setups.

Years ago I had an N650SLI-DS4 Nvidia based motherboard with an FSB wall from 380 - 420MHz and my highest stable overclock was at 490MHz but the temperatures were too high for me at this speed.

Well apparently some of the sticks are double sided and some are not, even the same model can have it one way or another depending on chips OEM, so that could be the problem I guess.. Looks like mine are single sided -- thermal pad on one side is substantially thicker than another.

Anyway, I will probably just buy X5470 (x10 multi) when/if I 'run out of FSB', it's just less hassle than replacing the RAM (and selling old sticks) without even being sure if it will work.

OK, it's time to make Luke feel bad, I increased my cpu speed just a bit, going from 3.655 GHz to 4.012 GHz:
BTW the following power saving options in the bios are enabled: C1E, C2/C2E and EIST.
As usual for me, LLC is still disabled.

Voltages and temperatures are decent and the Prime95 Large FFT stress test just flew right along for 4 hours.

The only problem is that at 4 hours and 1 minute the system froze.

The HWiNFO logged sensor statistics looked good, except for the Vcore values, where the average Vcore is ~ 1.28 volts and I'm pretty sure that it probably should have a minimum Vcore voltage that is at closer to 1.296 volts with higher overclocks. The HWiNFO scream-shot also shows that the Vcore voltage is lower than I expected.

With the time zone difference, I think that's almost time for Luke to go to sleep.

    Have a happy nightmare!!

Oh, this is my 7,000th forum post, I think that it might be time for me to retire.

I knew it was only a matter of time! I look forward to seeing you getting it stable!

Time is something I have been short of recently so I haven't been able to do any more testing since my last post but I make sure I keep up with the posts and always wish you continued success!

I would still quite like to hit 4.0GHz in the future but since I don't really use my computer for anything requiring CPU power it's just a matter of being able to say that I'd done it. With that in mind I'm wondering if you can recommend a graphics card to upgrade from my 8800GTS that would be the best 'bang for my buck' deal. I might then look into getting a better monitor... My first paycheck is due tomorrow and I'm starting to think of ways to spend it!
