    An 8800 GTS video card? And it still works?
    I guess that you've been good about keeping the mold off of it.
    I really shouldn't make fun of it, because I got by nicely with two 7600 GT video cards for quite a few years.

    At one time I powered an Apple 21" Cinema monitor and a 19" monitor with one 7600 GT video card.

    The bottom line is a new $150 or less exspensive video card should meet your needs. I assume that you are not into gaming so you won't need a higher powered video card. You will need to carefully read video card reviews to make sure that the card you buy has excellent cooling which will help keep the noise to a minimum. Instead of buying a less expensive reference card model, for only a few dollars more most manufacturers offer similar models that have a better cooling fan setup that will be much quieter.

    Keep in mind your future needs.

    Will you want a multi-monitor setup in the future?
    Do you want a 3D monitor?
    What about a 4K monitor?

    I'd like to get a higher resolution 27" or 29" IPS monitor with 2560 x 1440 resolution.

    Most major review sites will have a video card buying guide that is updated throughout the year. They might also have periodic (spring, summer, fall, winter or holiday) hardware buying guides that will include their recommendations for video cards in different price and performance categories.

    One site that I like is Graphics Card Performance Hierarchy Chart - Best Graphics Cards For The Money: September 2014 where they have a hierarchy chart with 37 tiers, where each tier includes cards that have similar performance. From their description on page 7:

    The graphics card hierarchy chart groups graphics cards with similar overall performance levels into tiers. The top tier contains the highest-performing cards available, and performance decreases as you go down the tiers from there.
    All newer pci-e 3.0 video cards "should" be backward compatible with your pci-e 2.0 motherboard. My MSI N460GTX Hawk cards had excellent performance in my older pci-e 1.x motherboards and I was even able to run a x16/x4 SLI setup in my P35-DS4 motherboard after installing HyperSLI software. To keep video card heat and noise to a minimum I suggest that your buy one higher end card instead of buying two somewhat less expensive cards in a CrossfireX or SLI configuration.

    Shop carefully, as there are frequent retail price reductions whenever new video card models are introduced. I bought both of my my Hawk video cards about 6 months before the Nvidia GTX 460 video cards went E.O.L. and the total price for both cards wasn't much more than the original price for one card when they were first released.

    Your power supply will probably be adequate for many or most mid-range video cards.

    I still need to check out my Asus HD 6950 video card that came in my hardware bundle that included my Q9550, EP45-UD3P, Scythe Mugen 2 (rev: B) cpu cooler and ram.

    I would still quite like to hit 4.0GHz in the future but ....
    I "hit" 4.20 GHz three weeks ago, but the system froze while running LinX.
    Today's tweaks did better, but the system at 4.20 GHz still has random freezes.

    I promise that this is the last time that I will use IrfanView's negative image option for a screen-shot.

    Sorry I've been so quiet recently Jim - work seems to be getting the better of me!

    On second thoughts I think I'll stick with the trusty old 8800GTS for the time being. My next purchase will probably be a new monitor (I have no idea which one) but since I don't play games, the maximum my graphics card would theoretically have to cope with is a blu-ray movie...

    My overclocking has come to a bit of a standstill for the time being mostly because I feel that my 3.8 setup feels quite slick :) I'm thinking it might be fun to have a go at adjusting the memory timings to see what differences we can make though.

    Do you think we can squeeze much more out of the system at this speed?

    With your current 960MHz memory settings 5-5-4-12 primary settings should be stable.

    With FSB up to about 436MHz (872 MHz) you should be able to use 4-4-4-12 or 4-4-4-10 settings.
    The 2.00B System Memory Multiplier might be stable with tRD = 8.

    The performance with either setup should be identical even though the memory benchmarks will be lower with the cas4 settings.

    With 402 x 2.66D = 1069MHz should work with 5-5-5-15 settings and tRD = 9.



    Your current MaxxMem2 results are similar to my 3.655 GHz settings with 1032 MHz and 5-5-5-15 settings.
    My memory benchmark with 4.012 GHz settings with 944 MHz and 5-5-4-12 settings is noticeably faster.

    You can get somewhat better overall performance with a lower cpu multiplier and a higher FSB such as 9.0 x 423 = 3.807 GHz or 8.5 x 448 = 3.808 GHz.

    Use the lowest tRFC setting that is stable with each of your profiles.


    Another option is to test with the standard F10 bios to see if you can get better results.
    When you flash your bios you will lose all of your saved bios profiles.

    With your tighter primary memory timings, change tRFC from Auto to 58 - 62; lower is better but only if your system is stable and doesn't cause Prime95 errors.

    It looks like work is keeping you off the streets and out of trouble.

    I've had no problems with 5-5-4-12 primary timings timings and tRFC = 60 with memory speeds up to ~ 990MHz, even with my semi-stable 4.012 GHz setup.

    Several days ago I had unexpected problems booting with my 4.0 GHz settings and couldn't get past the multi-colored windows logo before I could get to the desktop.

    My 4.20 GHz setup boots up fine but I don't want to spend any more time getting this setting stable.

    My final goal is to have my system stable at 3.9 - 4.0 GHz, but my current stable 3.655 GHz settings are OK.

    I'am tired of messing around with my system, so I guess the current setup will be for quite some time now. Maybe small improvements if needed but nothing much more than that.

    I don't particularly like the temps, but I tried reseating the cooler a several times without much of an improvement, so it's probably just how this chip runs (hence the 200W power usage despite very reasonable vcore), IHS is possibly slightly uneven as well. Under real life usage (like prime95 large ffts) temps are very much in check, so it's okay in my book. :)




    PS. RAM at 1680Mhz.

    So I finally found a weekend where I can get some overclocking in and also managed to get my hands on a Xeon X5470! :D

    Swapped in the new CPU and it looks like the microcodes need adding to the BIOS for some reason? (no SSE4.1 and VT-x). I have managed to get my hands on a modded BIOS https://googledrive.com/host/0B1E8C7...(rev. 1.x).rar and am about to give it a go.

    I managed to add the microcodes to the F11d BIOS and I started off with my 3.80GHz turbo settings which were stable on the X5460 and tried to run them at 4.0GHz in the X5470:



    Probably not the smartest move I ever made but they did manage to pass LinX:



    Ran Large FTTs and screen froze at 11 minutes.

    What say ye Professor Jim? Do I need to go back to basics and start from a mild overclock? I thought since most of the hardware was the same I might get away with similar settings... :/
