Hmmm, let's see now, with your X5460 you're highest stable overclock was 3.80GHz, so you naturally decided to push your luck with your new X5470 cpu by using the same settings but using the 10x cpu multiplier to see if your system woud be stable at 4.00GHz. Oh well, nothing ventured, nothing gained.

    Phase 1 Testing
    1. Increase Cpu PLL from 1.57 to 1.59 and run each of the three Prime95 tests for 30 minutes, one test at a time. Start with the Large FFT test, followed by the Small FFT test and finish with the Blend test. Make note of error details and be sure to run all three tests.
    2. Post your results, and if therer are any errors, increase Cpu Termination (VTT) from 1.26 to 1.28 and then repeat the three tests in step #1. Be sure to provide error details for this second test.
      Phase 2 Testing
    3. Make the following changes:
____a) Change Cpu Host Frequency from 400MHz to 402MHz.
____b) Change the cpu multiplier from 10x to 9.5x which will now run your cpu at 3.819GHz and then repeat the three Prime95 tests from step #1.

If there are no improvements, Change the System Memory Multiplier from 2.40B to 2.00B which will drop your memory speed from 960MHz to 804MHz and then repeat the three Prime95 tests from step #1. You might need to manually increase tRD one step higher for each of the memory channels.

BTW, the individual core temperatures during the LinX stress test are much lower than before, but cores #0 and #1 are 8o(C) and 5o(C) higher than the #2 and #3 cores.

What solved freezing issue for me, was setting MCH clock skew to 100ns (CPU still on 0 ns).
It didn't magically improve the stability all around, but now at least if a problem arrises, I get a BSOD with a somewhat meaningful error message, rather than just freezing without any kind of useful information about what went wrong.

What's more, what I learnt from countless trial and error runs is that even if you seem to pass prime95 small ffts or BSOD codes are memory related, too little vcore CAN STILL CAUSE INSTABILITY in tests where you would normally suspect chipset or RAM to be the culprit of an error.

    *****

For a week I was running 4.3Ghz, but I just couldn't get it prime95 stable (games were fine) without going crazy with temps. Testing 4.25Ghz settings in the lazy fashion now. :D

I tested again changing only MCH Reference back to Auto and ran Large FTTs:

Screen froze after 2 hours and 39? minutes (apologies for the poor quality image).

As for the temps, I tried the plastic bag finger spreading technique:

Not sure if I got it right but the PC hasn't burst into flames yet!

Changed CPU PLL to 1.59V as instructed and about to run Large FTTs for 30 mins.

    Results to follow!
    GA-EP45-UD3P 1.0, Intel Xeon X5470, 4x2GB Kingston HyperX DDR2 1066, NVidia Geforce 8800GTS 512, Kingston V300 240GB, Noctua NH-U12P with 2x Noctua NF-P12 Push-Pull, Corsair HX520W, Antec P182, Windows 7 64-bit

Thumbs up Re: Socket 771 Mod Xeon X5460 GA-P35-DS3L Overclock

Phase 1 part 1 results - No errors after 30 minutes:

    Large FTTS:

    small FTTs:

    Blend:

I guess the next stage is to run Large FTTs for longer?

Yes, it's time to run longer Prime95 tests.

In my previous post I did not include additional possible stability tweaks such as using different MCH Reference settings because it would have made things much more complicated. Other possible tweaks might require Dram Performance Enhance = Standard instead of Turbo, Clock Skew tweaks and/or disabling LLC. Obviously you will probably need to make some additional voltage tweaks.

The core temperatures are now better balanced, but the first core is still about 7o(C) higher than the remaining cores. As long as the core temperatures are lower than ~80o(C) I would leave you TIM setup the way it is now.

Large FTTs passed 8 hours :D

Windows explorer stopped working 5 hours and 20 minutes in - the test ran fine after I clicked ok but not sure if that's grounds for an instability or if it's ok to go onto 8 hours of small FTTs?

... What do I do now?
    a) quit while you are ahead
    b) "Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead!"

My approach would be to take a break from overclocking for now and to enjoy your overclock.
Given the addictive nature of overclocking you can later continue your overclocking odyssey.

    Windows Explorer has stopped working
When I get a message like this I click on View problem details and later follow up with a web search.
If you note the time of the problem, the windows Event Viewer might have some useful information.
You can also click on the Solve PC Issues flag icon in the task bar to see if windows can provide additional information.
A web search using: windows explorer has stopped working windows 7 will provide links that might help solve the problem.
Windows 7 Help Forums is one of the best places to find useful information from experts.

Congratulations on reaching your overclocking goal.

Question Re: Socket 771 Mod Xeon X5460 GA-P35-DS3L Overclock

I think I will stick at 4.0GHz like you recommend for now but maybe I should try and improve the memory timings in the meantime?

P.S. I couldn't figure out how to find the event in Event Viewer but I'll make sure to click the box if it happens again!
