As long as you don't mind repeating all of the Prime95 stress tests you can try:
    • 5-5-4 12 primary timings
    • 2.66D System Memory multiplier for 2.66 x 400MHz = 1064MHz with 5-5-5-15 memory timings

With the 2.66D multiplier, your Performance Enhance = Turbo setting should set tRD (Static tRead Value) properly.
With memory speeds in the 1066 - 1100MHz range, tRFC will probably need to be set to at least 66 and possibly up to 72.
I've had several stable setups with my 4 x 2GB HyperX T1 memory up to 1080MHz. YMMV

I'm surprised that your memory is stable with tRFC = 52 with your 960MHz memory speed.

A web search using: event viewer windows 7 guide OR tutorial will help you with Event Viewer.

You might find the entry in the Application or System sections when you look for !Error in the Level column.

In the attached screen-shot, I clicked on the Level header which sorted all of the entries where the !Error entries are at the beginning of the list.

Question Re: Socket 771 Mod Xeon X5460 GA-P35-DS3L Overclock

I didn't know which was better so I'm currently running at '2.66D System Memory multiplier for 2.66 x 400MHz = 1064MHz with 5-5-5-15 memory timings'. No stress testing yet but should be able to start tomorrow :)

Thanks for the Event Viewer help - This is the error I received:

I did some googling and found these instructions:

"Method 1: Follow these steps to re-register the Ole32.dll files
    a. Click Start, type Run to open Run window.
    b. Now, on the Run window, type regsvr32 ole32.dll and click OK.
    c. Again, click OK when you receive the following message:
    DllRegisterServer in OLE32.DLL succeeded."

from here (Windows Explorer has stopped working... - Microsoft Community)

I don't know if that will help but I guess (hope) it can't hurt?

It sounds like ole32.dll was crashing your party as an unregistered guest.
How did it happen? I don't know.
At least you've started to learn how to analyze some unexpected windows problems.

BTW, I had a random freeze several hours ago and the only help that Event Viewer provided was that there was an unexpected shutdown at the time of the freeze. That really told me a lot about the freeze.

    Memory Timings

Your memory was running at 986MHz with 5-5-5-18 timings which were not optimal.
At that speed using tighter 5-5-4-12 timings would improve memory performance.

Running at 1064MHz with 5-5-5-15 timings might be even better, assuming that both of these new settings are stable.
Memory benchmark scores should be highest using 1064MHz but it's hard to determine which setup is best unless you are able to test with some very demanding, memory intensive programs. Unless you are doing media encoding or intensive image or video manipulation, it will be hard to tell the difference.

Check out which are the most demanding encoding benchmarks, and then use a couple of them to determine which memory setup is the best for your system.

To further complicate the optimal memory speed puzzle, in most cases you will probably find that running with 4-4-4-10 (or 12) memory timings up to about 875MHz provides equally good performance in nearly all real world applications.

The best real world memory benchmark (and quick stress test) that I know of is to use 7-zip or winzip to zip, test zip file integrity and then unzip many thousands of large and small files that use about 10 - 15 GB of space. This type of test can be completed in just a few minutes.

Post Socket 771 Mod Xeon X5460 GA-P35-DS3L Overclock

    Hi All,

My first post here on the forums, been a forum lurker for a while however I haven't had the need to post until now. Since it is my first post I will briefly introduce myself. I am from Sydney Australia and am currently studying a business/finance degree full time (2nd year). I've recently starting building PC's from scratch and so far I have put together 3 or 4 in total (mainly for family), I've always had an interest in computers and it is always satisfying having your project boot up the first time . Well we know that doesn't always happen the first boot!

So recently I decided to set myself a challenge of building a budget computer recycling some old parts that were donated. I will include the specifications below, I am using the 771 to 775 conversion mod as it seems to be the most cost effective solution.

    Mobo: GA-EP45T-Extreme
    CPU: Intel Xeon X5470 (3.33ghz - 333Mhz x 10 Multiplier)
    RAM: DDR3 4GB G.Skill PC3-12800 - Part Number F3-17000CL11-4GBXL
    PSU: 650W
    CPU Cooler: CM Hyper212 EVO
GPU: NVIDIA Geforce 8600GT (This is a temporary GPU as I am considering the possibility of a GTX 970)
    HDD: Toshiba 500GB (SATA 6.0gb/s) 2.5"
    Optical Drive: LG 24x DVD-RW

I choose the X5470 CPU as it had good reviews with regards to its overclocking capabilities however I've hit a bit of a road block during the overclocking process. The MIT program within the BIOS gives you quite a lot of room to adjust settings however I am a little confused as to which settings are the appropriate ones to change. So far I have been able to adjust the CPU host frequency in order to achieve a Core speed of 3.99 GHz [3.99 x (6-10)] while still maintaining a default CPU VCore of 1.25V. I have stress tested this configuration with IntelBurnTest @ Maximum RAM for 10 rounds with no stability issues.

I have tried the following CPU VCore figures with no success of breaking the 4GHz mark, the PC will simply not boot when there is a CPU Host Frequency > 399.

    CPU Host Frequency CPU VCore
    403 MHz 1.25V (Failed Boot)
    403 MHz 1.25625V (Failed Boot)
    403 MHz 1.26250V (Failed Boot)
    403 MHz 1.26875V (Failed Boot)
    403 MHz 1.27500V (Failed Boot)
    403 MHz 1.28125V (Failed Boot)
    403 MHz 1.28750V (Failed Boot)
    403 MHz 1.29375V (Failed Boot)
    403 MHz 1.30000V (Failed Boot)
    403 MHz 1.30625V (Failed Boot)
    403 MHz 1.31250V (Failed Boot)
    403 MHz 1.31875V (Failed Boot)
    400 MHz 1.31250V (Failed Boot)
    400 MHz 1.32500V (Failed Boot)

I even set the CPU VCore to 1.4V and the PC still failed to boot. For further reference I have attached some pics of how my current MIT is set up. Any help or direction would be greatly appreciated.

    Xevipiu,

I think that you are asking ishen about which FSB/DRAM ratio he is using.

ishen's problem right now is that most of his bios settings in the M.I.T. Tweaker section in the bios are set to AUTO.

This is dangerous because CPU PLL and VTT (CPU TERMINATION) will be seriously over-volted with moderate or high overclocks when the AUTO setting is used.

We will know what many of his applied AUTO settings are after he posts a screen-shot that includes ET6, Memset and several Cpu-z windows.

On an unrelated note, the highest overclock with my Q9650 and P35-DS4 motherboard setup is 9.0 x 460 MHz or 4.14 GHz.

Ok, I have been using a Maximus II Formula P45

    Reference:
    Code:
    1.28v North
    1.59v PLL (Max air)
    1.2v VTT
    1.2v FSB Terminal Voltage

Is it safe to run Xeon's with cpu voltage higher than 1.45 volts?

As I recall the maximum safe cpu votage is 1.45 volts for Core2 Quad processors.
