Sorry that i enter this topic without reading every page.

I'd like to upgrade my MAC Pro 3.1 with the "fastest possible" Xeon CPU. Unfortionally only SLAxx Steppings do work in this maschine. The 5482 are very expensive and all 5492 have an slbxx Stepping. So i'd like to use the 5440 and run it with 400MHz FSB via pinmod.

Before i buy two CPU's i'd like to anwer:

Is there any chance to run the 5440 @3.4 GHz with the stock Voltage?
Is the voltage Mod of a 771 CPU simmilar to the 775 CPU's?

As a Testplatform dedustet an old P35 DS3 Board.

    Greetings, Stefan

    Hi all,

I've also got this awesome x5460 oc'ed to 4GHz on a modded P35 DS3L motherboard which replaced my q6600 cpu.

I currently have 4gb of super talent ram (2x2) and I was hoping to find another 4gb (2x2) to add.

    My question is, can the P35 DS3L handle 8gb (4 sticks) with my oc'ed x5460 ?

Also since I can't find another 4gb of identical super talent ram. Does anyone know if the below 8gb kits from ebay will work with the p35-ds3l oc?

    OCZ 8GB 4x2GB DDR2 PC2 6400 800MHz 240p Non ECC Low Density Desktop OCZ2P8004GK | eBay

    OCZ Platinum 8GB 4x2GB DDR2 PC2 6400 800MHz 240p Non ECC Low Density OCZ2P8008GQ | eBay

    OCZ 8GB 4x2GB DDR2 PC2 6400 800MHz 240p Non ECC Low Density Desktop OCZ2P8008GQ | eBay

    Or even 8gb 1066MHz memory?

    Thanks,
    Cozzysa

    Welcome to the forum.

To minimize potential problems with a 4 x 2GB memory setup, try to buy a kit where all four memory modules came from the same working system. Installing DDR2-1066 memory won't improve overall real world system performance in most applications unless you are running demanding programs such as rendering or a program like Photoshop.

8GB of high end DDR2-1066 memory will be much more expensive. A year or two ago my OCZ 1066MHz Reaper memory was selling on eBay for $80 for one 2 x 2GB kit. Fortunately the price for this type of kit is lower. A high end 8GB kit of Cas4 DDR2-800 memory will probably overclock up to about 1000MHz and possibly higher.

Check out GA-P35-DS3L Won't post with 8gb memory, post #9 for some excellent information. With a 4 x 2GB DDR2-800 memory setup, you your system might be stable with MCH Core = +0.2 and DRAM Voltage might be stable with a +0.2 setting.

As I recall the OCZ Gold memory is below to the level of their Platinum series. The OCZ Reaper HPC series is at the top of their DDR2 memory kits, but the tall heat pipe cooler might interfere with a large cpu cooler.

What mods have you done to your P35-DS3L?

I need to update my P35-DS4 specs in my forum signature.
    My current settings are Q9650 @ 4.050GHz [9x450MHz] and 4x2GB OCZ Reaper PC2-8500 @1080MHz with 5-5-5-15 primary memory timings.
CPU Vcore = 1.36875 volts. I might drop my cpu multiplier from 9.0x to 8.5x so that my top cpu speed would be 3.825GHz and I could lower my CPU Vcoe down one or two clicks.

Due to the age of my hardware, to reduce stress on the components, I prefer to run my Q9650, P35-DS4 system a couple of steps lower than my highest stable overclock, which was 4.10GHz.

    Thanks for the info profJim!

A little misunderstanding from my part, I mean that my bios is modded with the microcodes (not the motherboard itself) :D

    In the end I purchased the: OCZ Platinum 8GB 4X2GB DDR2 PC2-6400 800MHz 240p NON ECC Low Density OCZ2P8008GQ

    OCZ Platinum 8GB 4x2GB DDR2 PC2 6400 800MHz 240p Non ECC Low Density OCZ2P8008GQ | eBay

I'll post back when I receive them, with my findings.

Hoping to pair them up with a amd RX480 when it's released :)

You're welcome, glad to help out.

I suggest that you follow the following procedure with your new memory:

    1. Create a full backup image of your boot drive.
    2. Put a small sticker on each memory module with a unique ID, such as A1, A2, B1 and B2.
    3. Save your current 4.0GHz bios profile to one of the eight saved profile slots in the bios.
    4. Create a stable bios profile with no overclock; you will use this setting when you test your new memory.
    5. Turn off your system and unplug the power supply's cable from the wall outlet.
    6. Press and hold the front panel power on button for 15 seconds to discharge residual power in your system.
    7. Remove your old memory and install the new memory, making note of which module is installed in each memory slot.
    8. Offer a prayer to the computer memory gods.
    9. Turn on your system and run Memtest86+ v:5.01 overnight or longer.
If there are any errors, stop the test.
You will need to create a bootable floppy, usb or optical disk to run Memtest86+.
    10. If there are no errors, you might want to run some demanding programs for a while before you go back to your 4.0GHz settings.
    11. Reload your 4.0GHz bios profile and make required MCH Core and DRAM voltage settings.
    12. Rerun Memtest86+ v:5.01 for 2 - 4 hours.
    13. If there are no errors, boot your system normally run the most demanding games and applications to make sure that your system is stable.

note: the tRFC bios setting for your 4 x 2GB memory might need to be set to 60 or slightly higher.
A low(er) setting is better, but if it is too low your system might freeze, have BSOD's and possibly corrupt some files.

The RX 480 video card should be outstanding given its ~$200 price point and hopefully there won't be any price gouging when it is released.

There will probably be a modest performance hit with your motherboard's PCI-e 1.0 bandwidth with a PCI-e 3.0 video card.

Memtest86 errors are caused by incorrect memory settings or faulty hardware.

This screenshot shows an example of Memtest86+ errors at a single memory address:

This is my Memtest86+ screenshot, 2+ hours into a test:

Ignore the fact that Memtest86+ reports my memory as DDR2-1255 and CLK: 4185MHz.

Check out https://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/...press_Scaling/ where they test all three generations of the PCI-Express interface: 1.1, 2.0, and 3.0. Their performance tests include FPS results for 15 different games and 4 different screen resolutions for each game.

Here's a brief snippet from their conclusion:

Just like in previous articles of this kind, there is no significant performance difference between x16 3.0 and x8 3.0 (and x16 2.0, which offers the same bandwidth). The average difference is only 1%, which you'd never notice. Even a bandwidth-restricted scenario, such as x16 1.1 or x8 2.0 offered by seriously old motherboards, only saw a small difference of around 4%.
    Happy reading!

Thanks for all the valuable info! Estimated delivery of my ram is around 2-3 weeks so it's going to be a while before I can post results.

Glad to see that pci express x16 on the p35 ds3l is not such a big drawback!

    You're welcome.

It will be interesting to see how the RX 480 performs with an antique system and if there are modern features that can't be used with our old systems. For example, the Nvidia website says that DX 12 is not compatible with my six year old GTX 460 video card. The question is will your X5460 cpu and P35-DS3L motherboard prevent some of RX 480's features from being implemented?

I doubt that major review websites will publish any in-depth RX 480 gaming benchmarks for older systems. You would be doing a great service for others if you created an RX 480 benchmarks thread For LGA775 systems and posted video card benchmark results. Check out my MSI N460GTX overclocking and benchmark thread to see how much work can be involved if the thread becomes popular. The thread link is in my forum signature.

Good luck with your new memory!

ps: It will be interesting to see if Nvidia releases the GTX 1060 in early July.
Check out NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 To Be Announced on 7th July for more information.

wccftech snip for the rumored GTX 1060 release:

It is clear that GeForce GTX 1060 is meant to compete against the Radeon RX 480. Benchlife reports that the 3 GB models would be priced around $249 US while the 6 GB models will be priced at $299 US. This makes GTX 1060 a sub-$300 US offering which is where majority of the mainstream market sits. AMD is currently offering $199 (4GB) and $239 (8 GB) variants of the RX 480 graphics card to the mainstream segment.
