$200 or $240 for GTX 970 performance is a game changer!
Current GTX 970 prices at Newegg are $270 - $350, quite a few models are in the $400 - $500+ range and one model sells for $650!!

Power Consumption Concerns on the Radeon RX 480 - PCPer

    From the PCPer article:

UPDATE 2 (7/2/16): We have an official statement from AMD this morning.

As you know, we continuously tune our GPUs in order to maximize their performance within their given power envelopes and the speed of the memory interface, which in this case is an unprecedented 8Gbps for GDDR5. Recently, we identified select scenarios where the tuning of some RX 480 boards was not optimal. Fortunately, we can adjust the GPU's tuning via software in order to resolve this issue. We are already testing a driver that implements a fix, and we will provide an update to the community on our progress on Tuesday (July 5, 2016).

Memory arrived early! and its Looking good so far, not sure if I'm running the right test though :D

I've also got no experience with playing around with memory timings.

Should I change the timings? Because in memtest I see CAS 6-7-7-19. Which is different to the sticker on the mems as you can see in the attached pics.

Your memory is rated for 5-4-4 primary memory timings with DRAM Voltage = 2.10 volts
The pre-programed timings are 6-6-6-18 at 1.80 volts with the bus speed set to 400MHz.

Memtest86+ errors indicate hardware problems or bios settings that are not "close enough."

Set the primary timings to 5-4-4-15 with DRAM Voltage = +0.30 which will set the voltage to 1.80 + 0.30 = 2.10 volts.
Set (G)MCH OverVoltage Control = +0.1 or possibly +0.2, there will be boot problems when this is not set correctly.

Memtest86+ is good for an initial memory test but you will be using Prime95 to torture test your memory each time you make any bios changes. If you are not familiar with Prime95, click on the Prime95 tutorial link in my signature. I suggest running each test for at least 8 hours, but you should stop the test at the first sign of any errors. The Prime95 Large FFT test is best for stressing the memory, but the Small FFT and Blend tests should also be run, one at a time.

I run a brief 15 minute LinX test before I run Prime95 tests. LinX (and IntelBurn Test) are not as thorough as Prime95, but if there is an error with LinX or IBT, your system is not stable and it's a waste of time to then run a long Prime95 test. I run with 3072 or 4096MB of memory using 4 or 5 test loops. Cpu core temperatures will be about 10O C higher than Prime95.

Post a detailed screenshot that includes:
    Cpu-z, Cpu window
Memset v4.1 showing the main window and it's SPD window, press the ">>" icon to display both memory channels and SPD to display the SPD screen.
HWiNFO sensors to show temperatures, voltages and additional information.

See Post 683 for my sample screenshot.

Use this bios template to post your bios settings, where you fill in the settings as they appear in the bios. When you make any changes, update your settings and post the complete template along with screenshots.

Default Re: Socket 771 Mod Xeon X5460 GA-P35-DS3L Overclock

    Hello guys. I have a P5Q Deluxe board with a X5460.
I managed to clock it to 4ghz by just setting fsp and vcore(1.26v).
I am trying to get some better clocks from it, but i cant.
I bumped my FSB to 440 and my voltage to 1.29v. After setting my FSB voltage to 1.20 , my northbridge voltage to 1.2 and my southbridge to 1.14, i managed to boot in windows. About 10 seconds of prime95 running will give me a bsod with an error like whea uncorrectable error.
I bumped FSB to 1.3, northbridge to 1.24 and southbridge to 1.2, but i still get the same error. I also bumped my ram voltage to 2.1v
Still nothing. Am i missing something?

ps. i forgot to say that i also bumped my vcore to 1.3, with no success.
ps2. my ram is just random brands. two are kingstone hyperX 800mhz, one is apacer 800mhz, and the last is mushkin 667mhz. can this be because of my random ram?

    Thanks in advance!

    Welcome to the forum.

Using mixed memory modules often causes problems, especially when using four memory modules.

You haven't provided detailed information about all of your hardware and you haven't included a bios template that shows all of the bios settings that you are using. We also don't know how good your cpu cooling setup is or if the cpu core temperatures are too high.

The best thing that you can do is a web search using: p5q xeon overclock and find a thread that is dedicated to similar Asus P5Q Xeon setups.

Hello, and thanks for the reply man!
I did not mention my cooling system because its not a problem(atleast on 4ghz). I have a raijintek themis evo. My idle temps are about 26-27C, and the max i ever saw, was 51C. When stress testing with prime95 of course. (You guessed it. its a E0 chip)
I did not make the custom bios. A friend did it back when i bought the xeon. But its for sure modded to support the Xeon, and also the latest one.
I also thought that memory could the issue. I will try same settings, when using only the two kingstone dimms, which are a set.
    Thanks again!

Default Re: Socket 771 Mod Xeon X5460 GA-P35-DS3L Overclock

Hi folks, I hope someone can give me a little direction here as I haven't come across anything like this online, so bear with me a bit here:I have an old GA-P35-DS3L v2 board (with 771 socket mod and a X5460@3.16ghz) and had been trying to overclock it recently w/o success. Like at all. Couldn't bump up the FSB mhz or voltage w/o BSODing. I may be able to get it to run at 3.4ghz, but I'm sure if I left Prime95 running for long enough, it'd BSOD eventually. Fine, but I was curious as to why as many others have been able to get great overclocks and not me.
So i reset all the BIOS settings and then I finally paid some attention to the readings from the various sensor apps (HWmonitor, CPUz, BIOS readings, etc) and started to notice something odd.
(remember these are stock BIOS settings)
    - CPU Core temps seem a bit high for idle temps. I'm idling at 49C-50C. But I might be confusing core temps and CPU temps.
    - CPU voltage SHOULD be at 1.2375, however they barely hit 1.2 and usually stay around 1.184 - this seems not ideal. Reading in various forums, it's expected to have slight drops here and there but nothing like this where I'm never even hitting the stock settings.
In an effort to stabilize it all, I took all the BIOS settings off auto and manually fixed all the stock settings (so I know the BIOS is telling the computer to be running at those stock settings). The settings stick, however the BIOS has it's own monitoring screen and it shows the voltages still not hitting the stock value of 1.2375, though the temps are a bit better @ ~39C. Another thing to note is that no matter how high a voltage I set, it never reaches it. I think the highest I was able to get it to report was v1.28 and I had it set at 1.35 or somewhere in that territory (and cores were hitting 70+C)
    Socket 771 Mod Xeon X5460 GA-P35-DS3L Overclock-hwmonitor-12-21-2016-png
So, looking at HWMonitor, you'll notice that the values are fluctuating a bit. They really shouldn't be as I've manually set them all in the BIOS and disabled all settings that limit the CPU (speedstep, etc)
    other things to note:
When trying to overclock, raising the voltage seems to make the system unstable faster than raising the fsb (tried this for 'fun')
The CPU cooler is newish (about a year) and is a Deepcool Gammax 400
    I've tried both 1066 (7-7-7-18) and 800 (6-6-6-12) RAM

The PSU is 7-8 years old and is an OCZ 600W PSU with 80+ something rating, blah blah blah. Either way, the voltages reported by HWmonitor seem 'OK' to my untrained eye and even with some degradation is wattage, there should be plenty to supply my system.
So, do I have voltage problem with my CPU, motherboard or PSU? what's the most likely cause here?

Default Re: Socket 771 Mod Xeon X5460 GA-P35-DS3L Overclock

    Welcome to the forum.

We don't know which bios version you are using.
Has the Xeon X5460 bios mod been applied to your bios? If the answer is NO, do a web search using: X5460 bios mod P35-ds3l

The first 1/3 of this thread deals with Luke's Xeon/P35-DS3L and my suggestions.

Even though the reported voltages look good, an old psu might not supply stable voltages.

The bios shows 1.888 volts for your memory but this might be too low, depending on how much memory you are using.
The MCH Core voltage setting in the bios that is set too high or too low can cause boot problems and/or system instability.

You will see in this thread that Luke and I provide very detailed screen-shots that provide a lot of information.
You should always provide an accurate updated bios template every time you make bios changes along with a detailed screen shot.

System software will probably report higher than normal cpu temperatures because the software is using TJ max = 100, while your X5460 has a TJ max setting = 85. This doesn't affect your real world cpu temperatures, but the software will report temperatures that are 150(C) higher than normal with your Xeon cpu.

We need detailed information about ALL OF THE HARDWARE in your system.

We can best help you after you create a detailed hardware list in the System Specs
portion of your forum profile at the bottom of the profile page or in your forum signature.
