    Default Help OC 4770k / G1 Sniper 5

I've been trying to OC this rig for over a month with no success. The only OC I've been able to achieve is 4.4GHz. I set CPU multi to 4.4 and set Vcore to 1.23 - If I try to touch any other settings I fail test or BSOD. I find the BIOS overwhelming to say the least. I've watched at least 20 haswell OC videos and read all available guides on OCing the 4770k. I'd like to achieve a 4.5GHz OC with RAM running around 2000MHz if possible - FSB ??? Guys, I had to take a putty knife and scrape my ego up off the floor. That's how bad its been. I still have my first build you helped me with - P45-UD3P / Q9650 OC @ 4.05GHz (5years ago - still rock solid). TSUNAMI build - I can get to desk top @ 5.0GHz and OC to 4.72GHz rock solid stable. Any help would be much appreciated - I really mean it. Look what happened to my ego. Thanks wibujo

Came to the right place :) I just recently built a 4670k - it's not a great chip though, but with the help here, I'm at 4.2Ghz.
I would recommend pasting the following values from your BIOS here for your current overclock

    CPU VRIN External Override
    Vcore
    CPU Ring Voltage
    BCLK
    CPU Multi
    Uncore Multi
    System Agent
    CPU IO Analog
    CPU IO Digital
    PCH Core
    PCH IO
    DDR3 Freq
    DDR3 Timings
    DDR Voltage

Assuming that you have already set CPU VRIN LLC, CPU VRIN Current Protection and DDR Current Protection to 'Exreme'
    Intel Core i5 4670k C0 @4.2Ghz - Corsair H80i
    Gigabyte GA-Z97x-SOC Force (Rev 01, BIOS F6C)
    16GB Corsair Vengeance Pro 1866Mhz DDR3 9-10-9-27 1.5v
    Gigabyte R9 280x OC Windforce

    OCZ Vertex 3 120GB SSD - Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit
    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Small print - All suggestions I give on this forum are just that - Suggestions.
I'm merely suggesting an approach/opinion which I would have taken - You are welcome to try at your own risk.

Thanks for the info. I never read the Z97 guide because I have the Z87 - I see now it has a lot of info I can use. I'm coming from the X58A to Z87 which blows my mind with all the extra settings in bios.

I know...now that so much voltage control is on the cpu itself there's more knobs to turn, lol.
But Z87/Z97 are pretty much the same in terms of overclocking....I have a UD5H in both flavors.

Are you stable with your current settings?

Yes I'm stable with these settings. I'd always bsod or freeze when I tried to set uncore. I know now I need to bump up more than the multi. I'm not sure exactly which settings. Thanks again for the help. wibujo

Bumping the uncore won't do a whole lot, but if you're out to get all you can from benchmarks then you may need to increase the Vring (cache voltage) as you increase the uncore multi.

    Try setting below
    CPU Ring Voltage .............. 1.050v: 1.150v
    System Agent ........................: +0.200v
    CPU IO Analog ........................: +0.200v
    CPU IO Digital .......................: +0.200v
    PCH Core ...................... 1.090v: 1.100
    CPU VRIN LLC .........................: Extreme
CPU VRIN Current Protection ..........: Extreme
    DDR Current Protection ...............: Extreme

I see that you're currently at 44 Multi with 1.230v; Do you have a stable overclocl at 43 and 42 multipliers ?
If so, what was the Vcore voltage at 42 and 43 ?
Knowing the gap between 42, 43 and 44 may be of help in seeing a trend and estimate for 45.

I never gave 42x or 43x any thought. I read where the worst of these 4770k's would do 4.40GHz. I know from my previous 4.5GHz failures - the Vcore was around 1.28v - if I set lower I'd get BSOD code 124. I'll try your settings and hopefully it will still be stressing when I gat home from work. Thanks wibujo

Adding voltage to several settings at once per the suggestion isn't necessarily the best way to go. If you don't use a systematic approach, you don't know for sure what voltage is needed and why. The goal is to gain an overclock with the lowest possible voltages-or at least it probably should be.
FWIW I can OC all the way to 4.9GHz stable with 2400 DRAM and never touch the system agent or cpu i/o voltages....every cpu is different though and that's my point.
