    Default GA-X58a-UD3R Larger RAM

It seems that Gigabyte have quite a limited list of approved RAM for the GA-X58a-UD3R Rev 2 and no kits listed over 4Gb as far as I can see, unless I'm reading it wrong. At the mo, I have 3 x 2Gb Corsair 1333. I use Premiere Pro and edit HD so need lots of RAM. Can I add 3 x 4Gb and, if so, what will work?

Apologies if this has been covered but I couldn't find anything :-(

yes 3x 4gb should work and should support most modern dims

I know the Samsung green memory worked, ive seen it work

you could try the teamgroup memory as that uses the same Samsung memory chips far as I know

Thanks. I see the existing 6gb is Corsair XMS3 1600mhz 9-9-9-24 1.65v ver2.3A CMX6GX3A1600C9. However, I'm told my processor will only support 1333mhz. Is this memory OK (I guess it clocks down?) or should I change that?

I'd appreciate a fuller spec or specific part numbers so I get the right RAM as I'm totally confused by all the details like voltage, double-sided, kits etc ...erh, I recently came to appreciate that the 2 x 8gb that have just been removed were a waste of time due to the 4gb per slot limit so treat me gently

that's just the boards default speed, you can change the speed to 1600mhz with the spd system multiplier in the bios, could try 8x or enable xmp profile1 if your memory supports it

where does it say 4gb per slot limit?

The manual makes me think that ;-) "6 x 1.5V DDR3 DIMM sockets supporting up to 24 GB of system memory" 24/6=4 > 4gb This was brought to my attention when my techie discovered the 2 x 8gb chips and explained how they wouldn't work. That said, the OS reported the right amount of RAM. I find it all very confusing...

What else does it need to be for best performance? Is the voltage relevant? I don't know the first thing about XMP. I was told my processor won't support faster chips but I have no idea if it's correct.

ive never tested 8gb sticks, ive seen 4gb sticks work but see no reason why 8gb sticks wouldn't

you would need more cpu/vtt voltage with the more ram you add in,it might limit you to how high you can run the ram speed aswell, most ive used on x58 was 12gb @1600mhz 1.3750 qpi/vtt

xmp is just a profile that sets up the correct ram speed/timings for you
