When I'm testing a new overclock, this is the procedure that I follow:

    1. Five minutes after my system boots to the desktop, I create a screen-shot that includes HWiNFO64, Cpu-z, Memset and ET6.
    2. I close ET6 and Memset after the screen-shot is saved.
    3. The system is left alone until windows up time reaches 15 minutes to ensure that the number of threads and processes has settled down.
    4. MaxxMem2 is run and the results are included in the screen-shot.
    5. LinX is run and the results are added to the screen-shot.

This procedure lets me save a record of the settings which can be included in a forum post if needed.

Using Performance Enhance = Turbo worked for me up to my 3.50GHz (8.5 x 412) overclock.
With higher overclocks Turbo mode was changed to Standard and I had to manually tweak several additional bios settings.

The windows Event Viewer might have additional information when you look for logged entries just before the time of the problem.

When I get a BSOD my system creates a saved mini-dump and my system does not auto-reboot.
After I reboot the system, I can run WhoCrashed and/or BlueScreenView for more information.

You can run a quick test to see if you have better results using 7.5 x 414MHz.

You don't let me easily off the hook, do you?

    Here's my WhoCrashed:

    Taken before BSOD:

Why 7.5x? To see if CPU causing it or not? I'll do it but I hope you're not considering 7.5 for the final round. :)

My motto is walk softly and carry a big whip....uh make that carry a big stick.

The 7.5x test is just a quick and dirty temporary test.

You can test with the 8.0x cpu multiplier and manually increase to Cpu Vcore from 1.31250 to 1.31875 (1 click) or 1.32500 (2 clicks) and retest.

With our EP45 motherboards, BSOD 0x124 often means that the Cpu Vcore is too low.

Is there anything you can suggest for high temps on LinX? I've seen 88c. On games it doesn't go above 70c or so. So this isn't really a problem but I'm worried if tests can damage the CPU. I read Tjmax is 100c, but still...

Edit: Also, I keep getting "Display driver nvlddmkm stopped responding and has successfully recovered." error at times, naturally the game stops. Do you think this is driver related? I had one or two before, I think it might be about 344.48 but I'm not sure... Could I get such an error without relation to GPU/driver? I suppose not but I still wanted to ask...

    High LinX temperature options:

    • buy a better cpu cooler
    • run much shorter LinX tests using 1024 - 1736 MiB, but the GFlops scores will be lower
    • don't run LinX
    • don't worry, be happy, your cpu will throttle down if it gets too hot when TM2 is enabled in the bios

One of the best coolers is the newest versions of the Scythe Mugen air coolers.

My older Scythe Mugen 2 does an excellent job, but it is a very large cooler; the newer models are not as big and offer even better cooling.

HardOCP and Tweaktown have reviewed several Mugen coolers over the years and the performance is excellent.

Look at my LinX core temperatures in my 4.012GHz and 4.20GHz screen-shots in post #73.

If your video card is overclocked, lower the GPU overclock a bit and retest.

Sometimes an older driver version might not have stopped responding error messages.

You might find that with lower gpu and/or computer case temperatures that this error message will not happen.

Prime Blend test. 402FSB 3.2GHz 2.40B 965MHz (settings that let me play 2 hours of FC4). I don't know what to make of this, but this can't be a coincidence I don't think this is what you might call stable. I think RAMs are causing me to get driver errors. What's interesting is I get errors on a less demanding game (75% GPU usage, 70c~ GPU temp, 750MB~ VRAM usage), and not in FC4 (97-99% GPU usage, 80-84c GPU temp, 980-1000MB VRAM usage), at least not as much.

Default Re: Running 8 GB of RAMs with EP45-DS3R

    Your results look terrible.

The average and maximum cpu core temperatures are way too high.

Look closely at your displayed results and you can see that each worker thread is working on very different FFT tests and and that the FFT sizes for each worker are wildly different from each other. Compare your results with my results below.

The only suggestions I have is to:

    1. buy a better cpu cooler
    2. buy a matched set of 4 x 2GB high quality ddr2 1066 MHz Cas5 memory on ebay
    3. sell each of your current memory kits separately on ebay after your system is running optimally

The bottom line is that I've had excellent results above 4.0GHz with:

    • Q9550 + EP45-UD3P with 8GB of Kingston HyperX T1 1066MHz memory

I wish that I could be more encouraging with your current hardware setup.

Oh for god's sake lower your CPU fan speed to 1000RPM then we'll talk. :)
I'd think you get some percentage from those fan sales if I didn't know you're helping me for months. :)

There is no above than this cooler, the only thing that could not be working as the way it should could be the fan itself, and that's not a big deal. I've been thinking of changing it a few years ago anyway. I just wasn't sure about the size as it is not a classic chassis fan and there could be minor size differences.

1- Your CPU's base clock is higher than mine (2.66 vs 3.00)
2- My stable OC % is 20. Yours is 33%. Not such a big deal.
3- Your MB is probably better than mine. Maybe a lot.
4- Your RAMs are better than mine. (Reaper > Platinum)

I could OC to 3.6GHz and have no heat issues, only the MB forbade me to stay there.

I thought we past this. :(

Something to remind: Before I bought new RAMs, I've been using my CPU at 3.20GHz forever (e.g. 4 years +), ZERO instability issues.

I know those Kingstons are crap, but I am stuck with them.

Downdraft cpu coolers help to better cool nearby motherboard components but their cpu cooling capability is almost always inferior to upright tower coolers when it comes to cpu cooling.

You have cpu temperature problems and blaming it on a 1000 rpm fan doesn't help solve the problem.

My Q9550 base clock is 2.83GHz, the Q9650 has a 3.0GHz base clock and my current Q9550 4.012GHz o/c is 41% higher than its stock clocks.

Yup my 8GB of HyperX memory is real crappola considering that they are stable with 4-4-4-10 timings up to 876 MHz and they are only stable up to 1080 - 1094 MHz with reasonable voltage and 5-5-5--15 timings.

Come to think of it my 8GB of Reaper memory also is stable with 4-4-4-10 timings up to almost 900 MHz and they are stable up to 1111 MHz.

You forgot to mention that your Q9400 has 6 MB of L2 cache and the Q9550 and Q9650 both have 12 MB of L2 cache.

The EP45-UD3P is one of the best LGA775 overclocking motherboards, and your EP45-DS3R is a decent board that doesn't have some of the UD3P's features.

There's an old racing adage that asks "How fast are you willing to spend?"

How fast are you willing to spend to have your system run at warp speed?
