    Default Gigabyte Z97MX Gaming 5 - F5c BIOS

    Hello,

I have an issue with PCIe on my Gigabyte Z97MX Gaming 5 motherboard. Basically it doesnt work properly in Gen3 or Auto mode. Support suggested flashing Bios to latest Beta release (F5c). Is this Bios stable? Anyone has any experience with F5c beta?

    Thank you

    Dan

There is a Gigabyte modified bios thread on this board. Page 396 has an F4 custom modified bios with several components updated. Page 408 has an updated F5b bios.

I just received this board. Had to RMA ram, so it will be a week or two before I finish the build. I did flash to the F4 custom bios using qflash when I first booted up. Worked fine, and I verified I was in PCIE3 on a Sapphire 7950 using GPUz. I did not have any drivers loaded for the Intel video - in fact, I had not loaded any motherboard drivers at all, just the latest AMD Omega drivers.

I think trying either one of the custom bios is fine. F5c bios would also be stable, altho Gigabyte has not listed that as an issue being addressed.

I did go into the bios (classic view) and change DMI Gen 2 under miscellaneous settings from enabled to automatic. No idea if that had any effect on PCIE functioning, but just for grins you could try it.

    None of the above worked.

Is it a problem with my card then? Well a "problem" because gen2/gen2 dont really make much difference in real life I suppose:)

GPUZ is showing that my card is supporting x16 3.0 though but I simply cannot make it work. It needs to be setup as Gen2 in Bios.

Well, just to be sure - did you click on the little questionmark to the right of the bus interface line? That allows you to start a render test that takes the card out of any power saving mode. The bus interface should change to pcie 3.0 after a few seconds.

    Yes:)

To clarify it - I can select Gen3 in Bios (or Auto) but its not stable - everything is "stuttery" etc. But only after cold boot.

When PCIe is forced to work as Gen2 - everything works great. Annoyingly all my friends are laptoppers so I cant test it anywhere. I guess Ill take my GPU to the local computer shop and see if they can quickly test it.

Thought - could it be something related to chipset drivers??? mobo/gpu/cpu (Im still not sure whats causing this issue) was misbehaving when I used drivers from Gigabyte website as well as when I downloaded new ones from Intel - although their page is a bit confusing when it comes to downloading correct ones:)

You mentioned not installing any mobo drivers?

I noticed that when in Gen3 mode GPU activity basically jumps from 0 to 100% constantly

Date , GPU Core Clock [MHz] , GPU Memory Clock [MHz] , GPU Temperature [C] , Fan Speed (%) [%] , Fan Speed (RPM) [RPM] , GPU Load [%] , Memory Usage (Dedicated) [MB] , Memory Usage (Dynamic) [MB] ,

I have the same issue with my Z97M-D3H. Only PCIE-Gen2 fixes this.

I Was in an ongoing discussion about this cold start issue with gigabyte tech support.

    1. I described my problem and my system
    - they replied with FurMark Benchmark scores and said they can't reproduce the issue (same board and bios, cpu, ram, graphics card)
    - these i***** cold booted their test-system 10 times, off course they will get the same ****ty score each run.

    2. So I ran the same benchmark:
When pcie3.0 was enabled my system got around the same score and min/max/mid fps were identical, BUT the cold start bug was there (render test in GPU-Z was stuttery)
On pcie2.0 (and 3.0 after a reboot without the coldstart bug) the test was waaaay smoother on my system (60fps all the time) and the score was higher!

    - there next reply was again: "sorry, we can't reproduce the issue"

there system score (tested 10 times always after a cold start) = my system score (with cold start bug and ****ty performance)

So basically what they are saying is that scoring the same low benchmark score as a faulty running system is correct on their mainboard. And that my higher score with 2.0 is somehow non existent.
I can not take them seriously anymore! The only thing I learnt from this is NEVER to buy any gigabyte product in the future! And I will highly suggest this to anyone I can!

I am curious if you can fix this by changing the graphics card as I too own a AMD R9 series (280).

I hear you man. This is exactly same problem I have. Gigabyte suggested updating BIOS. Which I did and it made no difference. Custom BIOS - same story.

I will take my GPU to the computer shop nearby to test it and if it works fine on different motherboard than I may simply send my gigabyte mobo back. Good thing is that gen2/gen3 doesnt really matter when using single GPU. It is quite annoying though.

You can also mention to Gigabyte that you are not the only one having this problem. Send them link to this thread. Ill do it too.

    EDIT

Ive run Passmark and results seems to be pretty much same as any other R9 285 out there

They even told me at first that my power supply unit is too weak for my setup... :D
it is too ridiculous to be true :/
