    XPM has nothing to do with memory settings.

    XMP (Extreme Memory Profile) is the setting that might be available, but only if the SPD info for your memory shows an SPD column that says XMP at the top of at least one column.





    Your Q9650 should easily overclock to 3.60GHz and will probably go to 4.00GHz or higher if you are willing to put up with higher temperatures and cpu voltage.

    My stable Q9550 settings at 4.012GHz:

    Oooh thanks for the settings projJim…looks like I’ll be busy tonight.

    The highest clock speed I could get by only changing cpu speed was 3.25GHz. I tried some other settings based on what worked before but couldn't get higher.

    FYI...My Macbook Pro Core i7 with 8GB took FIVE hours to build AOSP! My old quad Q8200 with 16GB @2.3Ghz over an hour to build AOSP. My new Q9650 16GB/3GHz does it in 45m...and with my baby OC of .25GHz it's now 41m.

    CPU Host Clock Control: ENABLED (was disabled)
    CPU Host Frequency: 362

    362 x CpuClockRatio (of 9) = 3.25

    Interesting that my baby OC didn’t even seem to boost my temps by more than a single degree celsius. It basically ran just as cool as at 3GHz. Perhaps I just haven’t reached a critical “point” yet.

    With moderate or high overclocks CPU PLL and CPU Termination will be set too high with the AUTO setting.

    CPU PLL should be 1.59 or lower and CPU Termination (aks Vtt) should be at least 0.05 lower than Cpu Vcore.

    MCH Core might need up to 1.30 volts, but lower is better.

    The ET6 (EasyTune 6) Advance Voltage setting provides excellent information, along with the other info in my screenshot.

    Cpu Vcore voltages and temperatures will probably be slightly higher up to about 3.60GHz and higher cpu voltages will be required as you reach the high 3.00GHz range.

    Here is an EP45 bios template that you should fill in and add to a post that should be included with a detailed cropped screenshot:

    I’ve got my Q9650 OCd to 4.05GHz at moment and it is stable enough for memtest and an AOSP build (famous last words...minutes from completing).

    I was shooting for 4.20GHz but didn’t have the settings mojo to pull it off. Tried bumping up mem and cpu voltage and playing with memory clock and fsb multiplier. Very close, could boot into Ubuntu and start a build but then it would hang after 5m or so. Temperatures were barely a degree or two above 3GHz stock from what I could tell. In fact at 4.05GHz I haven’t even hit a cpu max over 50 yet!!!

    With a 3GHz cpu and fast SSD I was getting close to 5s boot times stock. Really started noticing delays as I clocked higher and higher. Now its fast again. It also helps when you remember to zero out the boot delay you put in so you could take a picture at startup…doh!

    I’ll get Prime hitting my box shortly for tests. At the moment an AOSP build works for this. At 4.20GHz I had memtest working for 15m or so (full pass thru 16GB) but the build would make it give up the ghost.

    I'm not using AUTO for voltage settings (yes I've been reading) and will examine issues you bring up. I've been 'tweaking' all night and need to get some sleep. I promise to post the info sheet later today...when I prob' hit you up for a few last Qs.

    Nothing like eating your own dog food. Was too aggressive trying to get 4.20 and had to clear CMOS. Found when I went to recreate 4.05GHz OC profile I coudn't!

    Re-eyeballed all my settings and here I'm 99.8% sure it's good. Clearing CMOS I notice at least 2 new settings "DDR Write Leveling" and "DDR Write Training".

    Am going to run Prime shortly...if you could glance at my settings and point out mistakes and optimizations...much obliged.

    Running prime with 4.05 OC produces a hang or reboot roughly every hour or two. Prime ran for 2+ hours only failing a single rounding test early on.

    I’m in the process of bumping up my voltages and will repost once Prime fails/passes. So far it’s been running for 20m without the first rounding error I saw before Volt changes.

    I’m sure a timing # of mine may be off as well. I feel like system is very close at least to 4.05.

    While running prime core temps range from 42-50C in kind of an even temp spread.

    Will report back once prime does its thing.

    Prime ran with no errors (all defaults) for several hours. Until I hear back I won't run at 4.05 as I think voltages are perhaps too high. Will fall back to 3.75 or 3.5 which didn't require any tweaks damn near. This is with 4x4 (16)GB RAM. Temps definitely went up. Two cores hit 58 but generally they were under 50 all for an ave of 44C perhaps.

    It looks like you aren't using the bios feature to save or load bios settings.
    Check out pages 37 - 38 in your motherboard user manual to read about how to save, load or overwrite up to 8 different bios settings.

    Is there a reason why you are running your memory at 1080MHz with the 2.40B memory multiplier instead of using the 3.20B memory multiplier to run your DDR3 memory at 1440MHz with the 450MHz FSB? I'm surprised at how easily you are able to use 16GB of Crucial's 1.35 - 1.50 volt DDR memory.

    You might have an easier time if you leave the reference volt settings = AUTO, as there is a relationship between the reference volt settings and two other voltage settings. With high overclocks it is sometimes necessary to tweak these settings.

    Sometimes it is necessary to tweak the Cpu Clock Skew setting to get stability. I have this set to 50 ps with my Q9550 at 3.825GHz and 4.012GHz overclocks. There is very little information about how to set this but most of the time when it is needed you might need up to about 250 ps.

    My preference is to leave Load Line Calibration disabled.

    You might find that you will have somewhat lower cpu core temperatures with higher Cpu Vcore voltage and LLC disabled.

    You might find it useful to run a HWiNFO alternative for Ubuntu to monitor and optionally log sensor values.

    Here's a screenshot of my Q9650 and P35-DS4 where I took a SWAG with the Cpu Vcore and it was stable enough for my LinX stress test. Even with my water cooled setup I didn't want to use any Cpu Core voltages noticeably higher than 1.40 volts with LLC (Load Line Calibration) disabled.
