Default GA-Z170MX-Gaming 5 USB 3.1 and Thunderbolt not recognized

USB 3.1 question: I'm having trouble getting Thunderbolt or USB 3.1 properly recognized in Windows 10 64-bit's Device Manager.
    Motherboard: GA-Z170MX-Gaming 5 (rev. 1.0):
    GIGABYTE - Motherboard - Socket 1151 - GA-Z170MX-Gaming 5 (rev. 1.0)
The (Gigabyte support page) provided Win10-64 USB 3.1 driver is listed as: Thunderbolt Driver 15.3.40.275 52.95 MB 2016/02/19
    There's also a "USB3.1 FW Update Tool":
    GIGABYTE - Motherboard - Socket 1151 - GA-Z170MX-Gaming 5 (rev. 1.0)
    B16.0315.1 8.59 MB 2016/03/15
Neither this driver nor this firmware update seem to be listed at:
    Station-Drivers - NEWS
In Windows Device Manager, the only USB 3.1 (or Thunderbolt) device that appears, is listed under USB controllers:
    Intel(R) USB 3.1 eXtensible Host Controller - 1.10(Microsoft)
    10.0.10586.212 3/28/2016 driver provider: Microsoft
Question: is the controller chip for USB 3.1 and Thunderbolt one single controller chip?
And is this an Intel Alpine Ridge controller chip, or a 3rd-party controller chip, such as Asmedia?
Note: I don't yet have any USB 3.1 or Thunderbolt devices to test with.
Although: shouldn't some device named "Thunderbolt" be appearing in Windows Device Manager?
Also: since all USB 3.0 drivers for Win8, 8.1 & 10 have always been confined to being supplied exclusively by Microsoft, why is Gigabyte now offering
    USB 3.1 drivers for Win10-64?
Why isn't the Gigabyte-supplied USB 3.1 driver being used by Win10, instead of the Microsoft-supplied driver?
    Note: Windows 10 -- Version 1511 (OS Build 10586.318)
    Thanks.

Edit: the Intel USB 3.1 device driver offered at the Gigabyte support site is also offered at Station-Drivers.com:
    Thunderbolt(TM) Software
However: the firmware update listed on Gigabyte's site is absent from SD's site.
