Thread: Dead Hard Drive?

  1. #1

i am having trouble with a hard drive. it will not boot into windows 98se. after the pc posts and reads the hardware it hangs and says one or more hard disks has developed bad sectors .... run scandisk. then when the scandisk screen appears, the pc hangs with no hard drive activity or progress from scandisk. this is my mom's pc and she has some pics on it that she doesn't want to loose. i've tried hooking the drive up to my pc as a master slave and now my pc won't boot! but when i remove her drive my boots up fine. is there any way to recover any of the data on the drive? what would prevent my pc from booting when i have this drive hooked up to it?

any help or suggestions are appreciated

i think u meant "primary slave" and not "master slave".
anyways did u check the jumpers while u added the HD as slave?
some master drives need to be jumpered as "primary master" if you add a slave to them.
see that ur drive was not set as only HD earlier. imo it is a problem with jumpers of master drive but i could be wrong.

oops, you are correct. i meant primary slave. anyway, i will recheck the jumpers but i'm sure i have mine set up as a master and the questionable drive as a slave. i will check WD's site for troubleshooting programs as well. thanks for your reply
