    hey all,

i just purchased a dvd-rom to put into my computer which already contains an msi cd-rw. i thought i had setup everything correctly, but here's the thing:

my computer recognizes both drives (they appear in my computer), but even with a disc in the dvd-rom it says "please insert disc" when you double click on it.

    any help would be appreciated.

check the jumpers, make sure the CD-RW is set to master and the dvd is set to slave
I've gone too far and need to move on!

Well, theyres your first mistake CD-RW should ALWAYS be master, no matter what.

Bah, what a load of hogwash. :) Perhaps a while ago, but nowadays things like that don't matter too much.

What kind of disc are you trying to put in the DVD drive? A DVD or a CD? Here's a little test:

    - Put the same CD in both drives and see if it works.
    - Put a DVD in the drive and also, if you can, try it in someone else's drive.

If you get the CD showing up in both drives, then the drive works. If not, then it's a drive problem. If you get the CD showing up but not the DVD, and it works in someone else's computer, then it would almost be a software problem, although not like any I've seen before.

Let us know how you go.

Ok Beefy you win, but ive never had a good experience with a cdrw slave.

But yea, Ive had that experince too crownjules and it was a faulty drive, so that is most likely your prob. UNLESS, its a faulty cd/dvd disc

I wasn't trying to be mean... but I once had a problem with a CD-RW as a slave drive, back when it was a 4x2x8 burner, but since then I haven't had a worry. At the moment I've got two burners on the one cable, and they both work fine.

How long ago did you have your last problem? Have you tried it since?

Well, um....you were wrong and he was right. :)

I switched the master/slave around and now it works perfectly. Didn't realize that it mattered which was which.

Hehehehe.. that's always the way, ain't it? OK, I'm very sorry. It's just that I hadn't seen that problem crop up on any of the machines I've worked on for a while.

Nice pickup amd.. I think I'll keep my mouth shut in the future. :)
