my friend is running an old IBM Aptiva, with a 450mhz Pentium II. he upgraded it with a new Soundblaster card (from the old onboard "Crystal" card), more DDR RAM (he has 384 megs, now), and upgraded to Windows 2000

first, he updated to W2K, to run Vegas Video Editor. It was then he noticed that his sound files (anything, from mp3s to wavs to compressed game music) "skipped." he used that word, but what is really does is get distorted, like the sound is metallicised for a few seconds. when this happens, CPU usage jumps up at least 50%.

all his drivers are correct. i think it must be either a compatibilty issue with Windows 2000, or his hardware is just starting to go.

what do you all think?
