I'm trying to help my grandfather with his computer. It's old, realll old. A micron running a 133 pentium. Anyway. It's now freezing at the windows screen, running windows 98 SE, I think. I tried getting to safemode, no dice, tried going through the step-by-step config, no dice. It has trouble (which I can hear) after I choose either Yes or No for the System Registry check. So I think it's possible software and I was wondering if there are other choices to fixing this as opposed to reformat. Any bootable programs that run off a floppy for win98 would be nice. Thanks.

Just boot it from a floppy. Win98 boot disks have some basic troubleshooting utilities included and they bypass the OS completely. If it still gives you problems, then you're likely looking at a hardware problem.

But something to consider... given the age of the machine, it is likely that it is just time to reload Windows fresh.
