    Ok, here it goes.

Just upgraded from a G4 Ti4400 to 128 Radeon 9800 Pro and in doing so my PSU has started to make a high pitched whining noise which is not present with the 4400 installed.

Furthermore if it was a low spec PSU then I would upgrade it to a higher wattage but I am currently running 550W Enermax PSU.

    System Specs:

    Athlon 2800XP
    1 GB 333 DDR
    2 x 147 u320 scsi drives
    128Mb 9800 Pro
    550W Enermax Diamond Blue PSU
    16X DVD-Rom
    4X DVD-R
    52X CD-RW
    SB Audigy2

Also to make things more confusing while in windows the PSU whining noise can be made intermittent by scrolling the mouse wheel up and down quickly or going into windows explorer and hitting the refresh key (F5) quickly.

I am starting to think that I may be overloading the 5v rails on the PSU but im not too sure.

If anyone has any ideas I would love to hear them.

    Thanks in advance.

That enermax 550 should be fine, maybe your fan is going out

Ive tried stopping the PSU fans with the machine turned on and there is still a whining noise coming from somewhere.

dont quite follow, the ti4400 is no longer installed in the machine so I doubt it will be making much noise without it plugged in

The only thing I can imagine a Whining noise coming from is a fan, unless, your speaker wires are interfering with something or other

yeah i was careful not to burn the fan out.

The Answer: It was one of the capacitors resonating inside the PSU which was only present with the Radeon card installed. What I think the problem was is with the Enermax 550 PSU the combined wattage on the 3.3v and 5v rails is 200W. Picked up a cheap Q-Tec power supply and the combined wattage on the rails is 285W. Ive emailed enermax, to see what they have to say.
