Thread: Comp slowing down

Default Problem With Slowass comp after a while

    I have:
    Windows Xp Professional
    Amd Processor 64bit processor 3400+
    1gb ram heatspread Corsair
A thermaltake case with 5 case fans
    Geforce 5900Fx video card
Asus K8V SE Deluxe VIA K8T800 Chipset ATX AMD Athlon 64 Audio SATA-RAID Gigabit LAN Firewire USB Mother board
Sound Blaster Audigy 2 sound card
And a 80gb western digital hardrive
and the rest is self explanatory

I am wondering why my system, which is pretty much above standard, is slowing down after a while. I have 5 case fans, i know my room is a bit hot, but the fans should take care of it? I also have it on amd cool and quiet, but that might not be the problem. Everytime i restart my comp when it starts slowing down though, it is fine. Spyware i scanned already, so that is out of the case. Getting low fps on games like world of warcraft and ragnarok online is also kind of bothering me. Maybe somehow all these are related to my comp. I dont really know if this is the right area to post but if anyone can give me any some sort of tips I appreciate it. Any software I can download, or any tweaks i can make in my registry or so. Please anything would help.

    Thanks again everyone,

Your other thread was deleted, no need for two. Go through the windows XP tweaking guides at and see if that fixes your problem.

Sounds like a program/s is not releasing memory when the program closes. That is why a re-boot fixes it. Look in "Task Manager", "Performance" tab, available memory when it slows down. Look again after a re-boot and see if there is a sizable difference.

What program have you scanned for spyware with? There's spyware that no "scan and fix" program such as Ad-Aware or Spybot Search and Destroy can get. There are also viruses. I'd recommend you use HijackThis, which is linked to in my signature.

Also, bigjackusa may be heading in the right direction. If you are running certain background programs, they may be causing your slowdown. This is related to the possiblity of viruses and spyware as both can be designed to cause such slowdown or do so as an aftereffect of whatever their main purpose is.

The guide will likely help you to fix both of those possible problems, but I would suggest you post your HijackThis log.

Just about all of that stuff looks legitimate (I don't know about stuff like uploadhidefile.exe, though...), but you have somewhere around 30 running processes, which is completely rediculous. That is almost certainly your problem. Close programs when you aren't using them. If they are left in the background, the will take up memory and processing time. I want you to go into msconfig (start > run > msconfig), or use HijackThis, and prevent all of those programs from starting up, except for Symantec. Run programs as you need them and go to the in-program settings and prevent them from running at startup. Even if it's something you commonly use, you should do this. Don't leave anything running while you're gaming except for antivirus (and more experienced users should avoid leaving even this on), including AIM. Unless it's an older game or something that doesn't have slowdown problems, nothing extra should be running.

When you're done with all that, go read Windows XP Tweaking: Reformat to Relax on

    Thx again,
I followed your instructions, and freed up about antoher 100mb of ram but when i ran the tests with the mark3d my comp still showed very low scores. T_T I only got like a 4190 i think on my score while other people got around a 5300 or so. Those two scores are such high distinguishing numbers. Please if there are any other suggestions anyone can make i'll be happy to try them.

Thankyou again everyone I appreciate your help
