Thread: 2cnd IDE drivers and windows NOT WORKING pls help

  1. Default 2cnd IDE drivers and windows NOT WORKING pls help

    Hi,
Windows xp pro, svc pack 1

As usual, without warning, a problem is pestering my rig. I just found my CD Drives are missing from windows. According to device manager its a code 39. "drivers are corrupt or missing, pls reinstall drivers"

    So I do.

    No fix. =/

Crack open my case and I disconnect my ide cable, connect it to a different ROM device, and one of the previously connect devices. Reboot...

    Blue screen.

    Reboot, safe mode.

    Reinstall drivers.

    Still no fix.

I guess a virus or something... any ideas on how to fix? I cant get the drivers off the win xp disc cuz i have nothing to read the disc with.. ERRR. Im looking on the net for drivers i guess.

thanks for any help in advanced,
    Dennis

Assuming you have not made any changes to the optical drive layout, go into Device Manager and uninstall (not "disable") the optical drives. Since optical drive support is native in Windows, a reboot should reload the drivers and let you start over. If this doesn't work and you feel that you've been infected with something, then attempt to clean it out and try again.

You might try checking out the Microsoft Knowledge Base and see if it has any suggestions. Windows is so buggy that odds are good that the problem has come up in the past and they have written something about it.

I tried some of the sugestions

    here.

No luck. Ill check out the knowledge base.

Some times i have to restart my computer multiple times to avoid the BSD. It tells me to check new hard ware and run a chkdisk. I only seeme to get the BSD when i hear a ver audible clicking "drive seek" noise coming from either my hard drives or optical
    (cant tell which)

could these mean the drive is going bad?

If you're getting any kind of clicking in the hard drive, that isn't a good sign... even if you've fragged the core system files within Windows. You might double check the serviceability of the optical and data drives in another machine and make sure they are being properly recognized without any clicking or unusual noises.
