Default PC Freezing then not Booting.

All of a sudden my PC started acting up, did'nt install any hardware/software so i'm not sure why this is happening.

PC will be running fine and just freeze. I have to manualy hit the restart button, the PC just sits there, dosent reboot, nothing on the screen, no BIOS beep.

What would the best guess be? I was thinking a Power supply problem or a RAM problem? (i have 3 sticks of 1g RAM i can swap around)

    Thanks all!

Well, have you ever cleaned out the dust inside your computer? I have to ask this becuase a lot of people don't know you have to do this every once in a while. Dust can cause overheating problems, and other issues. If your PC is clean on the inside, then I would check out your RAM. It is possible to have a stick going bad, or bad and causing it to freeze up. Next would be the condition of your HDD where your OS is.

Does your PC run slow when it is working? Have you defraged it lately? Maybe run a scan disk on it. It is possible for a HDD to start having issues and causing your computer to act up. I had a system running 98SE and I forgot to clean out the dust for almost 9 months, so after it was on for about 30+min it would start to act up, lock up on me, and even reboot. It was the HDD had to much dust in and around it. I was lucky, I cleaned it, and saved my drive.

That's about all I know of right now. Good luck.

yes it's blowen out regularly... for the RAM i have 3 512mb sticks, what if i move the sticks around? wonder if that would make any diffrence?

not sure they the OS and HDD would stop the PC from booting entirely, sounds more like a hardware issue then a software, right?

    Thanks!

3 sticks of ram? What CPU/motherboard? Many boards don't like an odd number of sticks of ram as well.

I can't specifically remember what he's got in there but I believe it's an Abit or Asus with an AMD processor. it's been running fine for 2.5 years, it's just starting to act like this now.

Well, then it depends on the socket. If it is pre S939 stuff, then 3 sticks is fine. Sounds like something is unhappy though. I'd try memtesting the memory if possible, even if it is one stick at a time.

Update: this morning I try turning it on, and nothing... everything turns on and runs but no display, i hit reset and I get a 3 Beep BIOS code (First 64 K memory failure).

So, i take all 3 RAM out and install 1 (yes in the correct slot)... it gives me the 3 beeps again, remove and install the 2nd RAM, same thing, install the 3rd, again the same thing.

So now all i'm getting is "First 64 K memory failure" problems.

    What now?

    THanks all!

Do you have spare RAM modules? Try using them.

Be sure to unplug the power first before swapping rams. If you swapped rams with the thing plugged in, you're in trouble.

    yes the power was unplugged.
I've got someone going up to get another stick of RAM from best buy, i'm going to slap that in their and see if it works.

If it still gives me the 3 beep error, what do I do then?
    Thanks again!
