Thread: GeForce 9800 GTX compatibility

    Default GeForce 9800 GTX compatibility

Hi, I have a Sun Microsystems motherboard; model number:2864; serial number: JL0G4P005SZ.
The motherboard has one PCI-E x16 (1.0) slot where my current graphics card is- an NVIDIA Quadro NVS 280 PCI-E.
My processor is an AMD Opteron 148 and i'm running Windows XP media centre.
I was wondering if the geforce 9800 gtx would even work with this board. If not, what's the best nvidia graphics I could get for that system?
The PSU power output is 400W max.

A geforce 9800 gtx video card should work with your mainboard since it has a PCI express x16 port on it even if its (1.0) but your power supply is a little on the weak side. You should have a 450 watt minimum but atleast a 550 watt would be recommended for that type of card. Maybe if your PSU is a good brand it might be enough to skimp by. You might consider whether the new card you get has a 2 x 6 Pin, 8 pin, ect. power connector port incase your card needs one to power it from your old PSU.
