Thread: Friend having computer problems.

  1. #1

    Default Friend having computer problems.

Another one of my friends called to come an look to see what was wrong with his computer. It is a home built computer built in July of 07.

Here is the problem. I went and checked it out and this is what happened. I turned it on and just played around for a while and it worked fine. It ran smoothly, had good speed and looked just fine. I started doing some more things and opened up a couple browsers. I then went and turned on media player when the browsers were on and started listening to music. The screen got a little fuzzy and all the words and pictures etc went multi colored and the machine froze. The one thing I noticed though was that the speakers had some tat tat tat tat sounds continuously coming out of the speakers. I forced shut down and and restarted and tried the same things to have the same result. I know it is not media player that caused this to happen because media player was not opened when it happened to him. He just had several tabs and apps open at the time.

Video card going bad? PSU? CPU? Memory?

These are the components of the machine.

It could be any of the things you mentioned. what are his temps like when you're browsing?
How does the power look in cpid, the 12 V rails? Have you tried to run memtest for a few hours yet? Have you tried to run prime95, with logging enabled?
First off, I would check temps on the cpu and chipsets and GPU, Then I would check and see if there is a big fluctuation in the 12V rails when your using the PC. Then memtest for a few hours. If those are all fine I would run prime95 for 12 hours, or until the PC freezes, or the program stops. Post back the results if you need further help.
    Good Luck,

Temps are great. 25 degrees for cpu. Ran memtest for 24 hours and no errors. Put in a new psu and still the same problem. What next?

The problem is totally random right. Nothing you can do to get it to crash? You check the ram and replaced the PSU. It doesnt sound like a connection to me, or the hdd. Did you look at the gpu temps? What about prime95, were you able to run that for any length of time? If you havent tried that yet I would download it, its free, and run it on a blend for 12 hours. I doubt it will make that long but the program will stop and tell you where it failed. Could be you have a MB going down. The speakers are run on the onboard audio right? I woudnt think you would get a visual and audio problem if it were the video card. I am wondering if the MB is going bad on you. Try prime95

All I have to do is go into media player and play a song is what does it. After installing the video driver last night I had to leave so I did not get a chance to try it again. I will be going there tonight and see.

After talking to someone I removed the video card from the 16x1 video slot and placed it in the other 16x2 video slot. I worked the machine to death and nothing happens now. It seems to work fine but what am I losing with this? Why would this work and not the other slot? It may go bad after they start really using it but at this time it seems to work.
