    Hey all,

My computer has just stopped working. Last night I was playing the new Shrouded Isle for DAOC, and it locked up. I reset the computer and after that the monitor wasn't receiving and input.

This has happened before, most knoticably when I was cleaning my box, and tried to take the video card out without releasing the AGP clip. I heard a popping noise and at that point remembered the clip. After I cleaned everything and put it back together, I was having the same problem. After re-seating the card, it worked. Off and on since then it has had the problem and I would have to restart a couple times. Also recently my keyboard would suddenly stop working, and I would have to restart.

After last night I have gotten the computer to work a couple times. The first time it locked up at the Win2000 bootup screen. The second two times, it has locked up at the screen after detecting hardware, and says there is a CMOS checksum error.

I tried a good video card in the computer, and it still had the same problem. My friend tried my ATI Radeon 9700 in his computer and it worked.

I'm guessing now that my motherboard is broken. Any other ideas?

Also, I have been enjoying my EPOX AK6A2+ card, but it only has AGP 4x. If I do need a new mobo, are there any EPOX out that have AGP 8X, and suppored the newest AMD chips?

    Thanks,
    JEK

Ya maybe havin' a PSU issue there. :?:

ATM there are a number of boards from EPoX based on either the VIA KT400 or even faster nForce2 chipset. Have a look here. :thumb:

Looks like I'm goin' to be findin' out about the EP-8RDA+ soon :D

I tried a good PSU, same thing happened. I unhooked everything but the HD, Heat Sink Fan, and video card and it still happens with both PSUs.

I tried a non-AGP video card, just to see if I can get something to come up on the monitor, didn't work.

I tried unhooking everything and removing the memory. No beeps, and the ERROR LED reads a code not in the manual.

    Anything else I can try?
Flash the bios or replace the battery one the motherboard?

At the moment I guess I'll take it out and send it back to the people I bought it from.

    Thanks again,
    Justin K.

if the error code is something along the lines of 07-0A its possible you are having the same problem i had with a system a while back...

i came to the conclusion it was the motherboard that was dead, but also that the AGP card i was using was killing the board as when i replaced boards same problem happened, so one cheap VC killed two mobos :( not happy, anyhoo, this is most likely a similar problem, so i'll see if i can dig up the thread

EDIT: this is my old thread:

    Arg, I hope it's not the video card, it's a Radeon 9700.

I guess I'll get a new mobo and hope for the best.

    Thanks,

Well, I sent the mobo to EPOX and they said it was fine. They reset the CMOS, I probably should have tried that, hopefully that will fix it. I'll try it when it arrives.

I got my motherboard back from EPOX today. I put it together outside of the case, like they told me to. I turned it on and it went to the detecting hardware screen. It detected the 2200+ chip, and then detected something else and listed it over to the far right, does that mean anything? It was either the video card or memory, at that point it locked up.

I turned it off and back on, but there was no output to the monitor. I reset the CMOS, but still nothing.

I'm getting the Post Code Error "C0"
    Early chipset initialization:
    - Disable shadow RAM
    - Disable L2 cache (socket 7 or below)
    - Program basic chipset registers

What the hell does that mean???

I've just tried it a couple more times, and now I'm not getting any error code. My thinking is it's the memory or the AMD chip. I don't know if I ever got my heatsink on right. I'll test a different memory module, after guess that makes it the chip.
I don't think the hard drive could be causing these problems, could it? I tried booting without the HD and got the same results.

Heres a though, could it be the power going to the PSU? My house has really old and bad wireing. could that have caused something to break? I tried a good PSU in it and that didn't make it work.

    Thanks,
    jek

Definately try another stick of memory and have ya got the power connected to the video card? Also is the clip of the HSF on the right way as this has the sound of a heat issue as well? :?:

Bleh. I tried 2 sticks of different memory. Still the same thing.

To recap, I've tried a new video card, sent the mobo back, and new memory. That leaves the chip and hard drive or perhaps power going to the PSU.
The clip is on the right way, that was the first problem I had with this computer.

My problem is it boots up and sounds correct, but nothing comes up on the monitor.

Could power or hard drive cause this problem? The heat sink could be resting on it wrong. I think I may have bent the clip at one time or another.
I don't really want to barrow anyones CPU, since I don't like messing with heatsinks and wot not. I guess I'll try sending this one back and/or order a new one.
