I hate em', mutch better and more stable connection via a nic. :2cents:

Anyway, my brother called me up the other day and told me that he can't get his connection to work on his new Laptop. He is using a USB cable modem and XP Home. I explained how to check the for the modem in the hardware manager and all that, he said it looked fine. But what is really needed for a usb modem to run proper under XP? I've only used proper nic connections which is better IMH, not one single disconnection over the years. Except when my ISP has runned into problems but thats another story.

He should not need any other software in order to connect right? He mentioned this software disc he got from the modem provider which helped him to hook it up on his other older Win98 machine. But on this new XP Lap it just won't work.

Any simple basic ideas I should start with when calling him up tomorrow? The thing is that he lives very far from here so the phone is the only option, and he doesn't now **** about computers, not even the basics.

Man how I wish he had bought a nic modem, then hed be online already,
downloading porn just like the rest of us.. :rolleyes2

If it's usb, it will require drivers to be installed. so you wanna check device manager to see if they are. If they are and no browsing, open a dos window and run ipconfig. See if he's getting an IP address from the cable network.
