ah maybe the difference there is u use a server. my network is set up such that my modem connects to the router and then all my pcs connect in turn to the router and hence no server. Maybe that's why mine didn't run normally with just a TCP/IP connection.

ok, i got system restore going on the ME. I found that if i disconnect the USB Direct connect, it boots fine and dosent blue screen.

well, how do i find out what USB ports ive got? (2.0 or 1.1?)

According to the literature, the thing is compatable with USB 1.1

    -edit-

From technical specifications, in the USB Direct connect user guide:

Operating system compatability: Windows 98, 98SE, ME, 2000 (Released before XP, separate instructions for setting up on XP)
    Standard: USB 1.1
Connectors: 2 USB "B" -type connectors

Ya motherboard manuals will tell ya what they are but I prefer to use nic's and Cat5E cables to network with.

is there anyway of finding out what motherboard the comp has from the computer itself?

The MEs literature has long since disappeared, and the XPs says nothing usful (Its a Sony Vaio, fisher price type stuff. know what i mean?)

Most mobo's will have the manufacturers name and model number printed on them somewhere but this page can help ya further if ya can't find them.

    well... (Dare i say it?)
The network seems to be working perfectly.

All i did was disconnect the USB device from both computers when the network locked, and reconnected it. its working fine. both comps can se eachother, access eachother, see the printers on this XP comp.

    Weird.

well, working perfectly for 5 minuites.
Then it locks again, and i have to disconnect and reconnect the Direct Connect.

    Some good news tho,
Games work perfectly over the network. i get the prob when finding a game hosted on the other machine, but when in game, it dosent cut out or anything.
