    What is the fastest ethernet card I can use for my cable connection.

    10Mbps is all that is required for a cable connection but higher won't hurt. ;)

    The new Intel Pro/1000 MT Gigabit Desktop Adapter is nice.

    But that card would be total overkill for a simple cable connection... :)

    I install adsl with both usb1.1 and ethernet cards and there is no discernable difference. I doubt your bandwidth will be over 1 mb so it doesn't matter what ethernet card you use. Use the cheapest one you can find. You will see no difference in data transfer.
