I am fairly new to wireless network but have a fair idea of how things work since my home is setup with wireless now.

There are a couple different ways you can go about this... First buy your router access point and add a wireless adapter to it and buy two more wireless adapters for your notebook and PC 3 )make sure all 3 are the exact same models) - then connected PC 1 to the router access point via standard CAT5 cable through its standard NIC.

But the problem is, as far as I know, both your notebook and PC3 will want to share the 22mb/s wireless connection between them, if you go 802.11b, since they are both using the single wireless adapter connected to the access point.

So that means each PC will get 11mb/s (theoretically), which remembering is more than enough for basic networking operations like Internet and printer sharing. Gaming you'll get pings around 50ms.

    thanks much appreciated

rang a tech support line on belkin and it seems where i was getting confused was the availablity of an access point (I now know it is for using an existing wireless componet on an existing hard wired network.

It then began to make sense once I ignored that particular component

    I have ordered the following:

    1 gateway router
    1 notebook card
    1 usb adapter

they explained that I would be better hard wiring between router and existing pc nic (that way I save 50 quid on an extra usb adapter)

so the way they explained to do it is this.

put the existing Line in on pc nic into router instead
run a cable from router to nic
    install notebook card
install usb adapter to daughters pc upstairs.

we dont play games and despite a 1meg broadband connector dont download much either.

a lot of it is to do with me being able to access my pc from my notebook plus occasional internet work for college by daughter

really appreciate your input thanks again
