Why does that kind of (28.8Kbs) modems still exist? Does the phone line limit the speed in some places or what? A New 56Kbs modem doesn´t cost too much these days...

I don't know about the 28.8 modems I run a 56k modem but sadly it willl never connect at that speed here. Yep its the phone lines and my distance from the main hub or whatever. I live just over 5.5 miles from the main Phone Company server, so 28.8 is as good as I get. Or as the phone company said "26.4 is all we have to provide." So I was happy when I finally connected at 28.8. Oh and M$N says that they cannot support more than one modem per computer, so no stacking for me:cry:  :snip: :shoot2:

Unfortunately the only pairgaining that has been done was when i asked for a second line. I am at the extreem end of the phone line...the main cable ends in front of my house and my Wires come out of the stub. When I requested another line the told me that it could not be done with out the pairgain. so I ended up with it, but when they did my speeds went from 26.4 to 28.8. Thats better right?;) The reason that they were unable to provide a direct copper connect was because I am at the end of the line, and the lines between here and there are hacked apart and are not connected anymore. So the only way to get it done was to get the pairgain:cry: but its better than 26.4, right?

I bet that ya line is pargained at some junction also before it gets to you as well, sounds like ya local exchange is in bad need of a refit as 5.5 miles shouldn't have that sort of degrade unless the lines are really ancient and degradin' badly. :(
