    hi guys!

I just got mandrake 9.2 and tryed to install it on my pc after having completely formatted the hd.(before i had winXP)
When i arrived at the configuration screen i was asked to set the graphic interface: so i chose the drivers that would correspond to my hardware.... as for the monitor i didn't have any big problems, but for my graphic card ... it's a freakin' nightmare! I've got a hercules 3d prophet 9800Pro ( based on the ati radeon 9800Pro).
I looked for the hercules drivers, but nothing was there; i then checked out the ati drivers and tryed them out as it asked me ( the config utility ). No results, just several error messages like " (EE) cannot determin screen layout" or something similar....

    please help:wow: :wow: :wow:

    thanks :)

use generic VESA drivers at install time and after that get drivers from ATi's site.
    http://www.ati.com/support/driver.html
Don't forget to read the "intallation tips". though that is a long file but you must READ before installing stuff in Linux.

ok... i`ve tryed everything i could but during the rpm installation of the driver i downloaded from ati`s support page i keep on receiving this message:

    Installation failed:
file /usr/X11R6/lib/libGL.so.1.2 from install of fglrx-glc22-4.3.0-3.7.0 conflicts with file from package libxfree86-4.3-23mdk

i really can`t figure out how to get my 9800 to work properely!

4 the time being i`m using standard vesa drivers, but because there`s no 3d acceleration games and screen savers look really crappy!!

    thanks 4 the attention:)

    cheers

p.s. thanks asklepios... at least now i can use kde!

    what command are using?
rpm -ivh or rpm -Uvh ?
-Uvh should update your drivers to the official ones.

did you read the installation instructions?
    http://www2.ati.com/drivers/linux/readme0370.txt
it seems that you already have the correct drivers installed. you now need to configure your system to use those drivers and for that you need to read the README file that is linked above.

well... i read the documentation ( since the beginning, maybe i must have missed some part....:o ) but I still have vesa driver... so I can't run all that fglrx stuff ( fglrxinfo, fglrxconfig.... ): at least that's what I have figured out 'till now.

I could try to remove the lib that conflicts and then run the rpm.... but i just guess it's something a little stupid....:snip:

    u said it!:)

but now I 'm having trouble with the agp... i can't activate it: i've followed all the steps of the fglrxconfig but I'm having no results... it might be due to the fact that linux doesn't enble the " Processor to AGP Controller
" (this is what it shows me in Harddrake: Vendor: Intel Corp.
    Bus: PCI
    Bus identification: 8086:2571
    Location on the bus: 0:1:0
Description: 82865G/PE/P Processor to AGP Controller
    Module: unknown
    Media class: BRIDGE_PCI)

Also when I run fglrxinfo it displays:
    display: :0.0 screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: Mesa project: www.mesa3d.org
OpenGL renderer string: Mesa GLX Indirect
OpenGL version string: 1.3 Mesa 4.0.4

    unstead showing this message:

    OpenGL vendor string: ATI
    OpenGL renderer string: FireGL 8700/8800
    OpenGL version string: 1.2.1234 (1.2.3)

or something like this that would mean that 3d acceleration is active.
