SCO has finally named the first company it will sue for using Linux - the open-source operating system that SCO feels infringes its Unix copyrights.

Car parts chain AutoZone, headquartered in Memphis, is the lucky punter. And SCO has waited until today, when AutoZone is announcing its second-quarter results, to give it the bad news.

    :grr:
why wont SCO just give up and die? It's a hopeless battle that it keeps draging out. SCO has lost all respect in the corporate world, why does it keep up this senseless quest?

It is also SCO's second-quarter earnings announcement day. It has a noticeably different set of results - down 18.9 percent year-on-year to .4 million.
No wonder they want to charge $699 per liscence. I agree with minibubba, its time for them to give this up. I don't know though, 11.4 mill might be chump change to them.

I would add my two cents worth but I feel the expletives I have in mind wouldn't be suitable for some of our younger readers. To sumarize, however, I wouldn't feel too badly if SCO and its entire staff were to suddenly come up missing one day. :grr: :grr: :grr:

Executives at Autozone must be feeling unlucky at being the recipient of a lawsuit from SCO when there are so many other corporate Linux users that SCO could have chosen from.

However, the defence may take heart that the court in which SCO filed suit runs its own web site on Linux, and that the key electronic documents SCO filed in the case will be living on a Linux server. Plaintiffs filing lawsuits must enter copies of their legal documents in Adobe PDF format in the court's Linux-based Case Management/Electronic Case Filing (CM/ECF) system, which will provide electronic updates of case information for the litigants and their lawyers.

Presumably, that means SCO's lawyers filed the lawsuit using a system that it contends infringes its intellectual property. SCO's numerous press pronouncements have thus far not mentioned whether its lawyers sent the Nevada court a cease-and-desist letter prior to filing the documents, or indeed whether it plans to file suit against the court itself.
