The system uses older 168-pin PC100 SDRAM modules, which can still be found but usually at a high cost since they're not being manufactured anymore by the Tier 1 companies (they're just emptying current stockpiles). Just make sure your friend realizes he cannot go any higher than three 256MB modules since this is the limit of the motherboard. Also, if you end up having to get PC133 modules because that is all that is available, that is fine as well since it will run just fine at the slower speed.

Where did you get this idea? It's pretty cheap at Newegg (~$25 for 256MB, ~)$15 for 128MB, and you can get used sticks (as much as 256MB) for $3-$10 on Anandtech and eBay. 168-pin RAM is cheaper than ever.
