Default Inserted RAM, then computer keeps Beeping !

I've just bought PC2700 RAM 1 GB DDR 333 PC 2700 DIMM MEMORY 184PINd off of eBay.
I put the RAM into the one of the two slots (the other one already had a stick in it) However, when I turned on my Computer, the tower kept beeping and did nothing? Any Help?

    My System info is:

    Microsoft Windows XP
    Home Edition
    Version 2002
    Service Pack 2

    Manufactured and supported by:
    Hewlett-Packard
    Pavillion
    Intel (R)
    Celeron (R) CPU 2.60GHz
    2.60GHz, 256 MB of RAM

First off, are you certain that your computer is capable of using 1GB modules of memory? Just because there is a slot that the memory fits into does not mean that the board can address larger module sizes.

Secondly, what is the series of beeps before it repeats itself (or the system powers off automatically)? Depending on the system BIOS, these beep codes can be interpreted and can give you an idea what the problem is. Generally your machine will have a series of short and long beeps.

Here and here are a couple of pages to begin your search for the beep codes.

try reseatting graphics cards & PCI cards, somethime they get knocked when you put ram in,

how many beeps would give us an idea of what sort of problem you have

does it work if you take the ram out ?

The beeps are long beeps, it'll just beep for awhile, then stop , then start again. But yes, as soon as I take the RAM out it works. Im also not sure if the computer is capable of taking 1GB, sorry.

Deliville, your mainboard will only support a max of 1GB of memory and will only support memory modules up to 512MB in each DIMM slot (2x512MB=1GB).
