Default wrong timmings - I duno

    Hi Guys I have
gigabyte GA-p35-s3g MB, INTEL core 2 duo e8400
    Memory is OCZ DDR2 PC2 8500
I used to pc2 5300 memory installed. I have changed the timings 5-5-5-15 as it says on the labels of the OCZ dims but memtest is saying its pc2 5300 running at 333 MHZ
I`m unsure what gives here and what to do here's my settings.
these have been set by me in auto it comes up with something silly like 5-7-7-24 (i think they are them)
    CAS Latency Time 5 / Dram RAS# to CAS# Delay 5 / Dram RAS# Precharge Delay (trp) 5 / Precharge Delay (tRAS) 15

All advanced timings in bios are set to auto as i`m not sure what they are supposed to be but i`m guessing its reading wrong as the other timings were wrong if left to auto setting
refresh cycle time trfc 56 / performance level 5 / Write to Precharge Delay 16 / write to read delayed (twtr) 12 / ACT to ACT Delay (tRRD) 4 / Write to READ Delay trd_wr 8 / Read to Precharge Delay trtp 6 / Refresh period (tref) 4160 / Command rate 2T
Sorry if i`ve left anything out here. I`m not breifed on this stuff. I have run 3dmark 06 on this both with 5300 dimms and with the new 8500 dims. the 5300 dimms that were in pc from new score better than the replacement 8500 dimms !!!

What does the Memory Tab of CPU-z show, not the SPD Tab.

Did you change your System Memory Multiplier in the BIOS yet, if not that may be why they are still running at 667Mhz as you see in Memtest

Hey LSD, how the H*** are you?
I didn't change anything but the 5-5-5-15 in the Bios. Don't know what I`m doing with it dude. I tried reading up on it but gave up when I kept going around circles. Sys performance isn't good really, 3dmark results are rubbish unless all gfx turned down and std res.
below is the dump from CPU

    Memory Type DDR2
    Memory Size 2048 MBytes
    Channels Dual (Symmetric)
    Memory Frequency 533.4 MHz (5:8)
    CAS# 5.0
    RAS# to CAS# 5
    RAS# Precharge 5
    Cycle Time (tRAS) 15
    Command Rate 2T

    What do you think dude

That shows they are running at 1066Mhz. If you need more help please tell me the issue and give me your full settings you are using.

Sorry for the late reply here, I rarely have time to get out of the Gigabyte section >>>

    Hi LSD,
Many thanks for getting back to me dude. I understand you are really busy so no worries about the delay.

So below is the info you requested. Yes it would appear that its running at its correct settings now but I cant help but feel somewhat disappointed as to the final performance with the new DDR2 8500 ram. Anyways I would be grateful to you if you could give this a once over and if you have any suggestions as to what I can do to maybe get a bit more but without the cooling issues.

I`m really stuck on this one maybe there is something not set right I am afraid I just don't know.

So back to you my Friend

Well the S3 is pretty much a budget board, so not sure how much can be expected from it, but since you are at stock speeds you should not be having issues.

Can you please give me the model # of this ram, or a link to it just so I can be sure of suggested voltages.

    Is this 2x1, 4x1, or 2x2GB ram?

What BIOS version are you using? And did you properly flash to it, meaning after the flash you loaded and applied optimized defaults and then rebooted back to the BIOS to make changes?

    Hey LSD,

How are you dude? All well I hope. I have flashed my bios to the latest version F5b from F4 and their was no difference man. I flashed and I reset it in the hope of it picking everything up by this I mean reset using the jumper on the board. Then i loaded the optimised settings then after re-boot made my adjustments. Still no difference!

    The updated RAM is OCZ Technology 2X1GBKIT 240PIN PC2-8500 DDR2 OCZ2N1066SR2GK

I have 2X1gb strips and they are set up in slots 1 & 3 for the dual thing, (ya know what i mean).

I know that 3Dmarks cant be relied on 100% but its all i have to compare it between old memory and new. And what I cant understand is` its scored better with the old memory! The only thing that it doesn't do now is freeze up in game play. Its just not right man and i don't know why.

I know and agree that this MB is crap but at the moment I cant really do anything about it, I will in time though and i have plans on a dual SLI capable board.

Any suggestions mate will be really appreciated, I would go with a mild OC but with direction because i don't have a clue in that department and I don't want to go to the extremes of changing coolers or anything like at the moment. I do have intentions of changing some bits towards the end of the year, MB another GFX for SLI are the main ones maybe even a quad core. But none of this for awhile yet.

Once again many thanks for your time, I think its a great thing that your doing here.

Look forward to hearing back from ya.

    Russ

Well thanks, lets try a small overclock then to 3.4, shouldn't need much if any extra Vcore. But do keep in mind you might, so dont give up if one or two bumps do not work. Are you using stock cooler then?

Ram timings will change a little, thanks for the link

Old memory, what was that kit?

    Hi LSD

Tried the settings that you showed me
I`ve changed the setting in the bios and upon re-boot it almost gets to post then shuts down and restarts. (with a few seconds off, I did worry if it would restart for a moment)

Then when it hits the post screen the bios settings have reverted back to what they were previously. Then it boots with no problems. I tried to take to 3.4G using Easy tune with that it freezes up about 5 seconds after hitting the go button.

So I left the CPU clock alone and just changed the advanced timings and there was no difference in performance.

I have two thoughts here my friend.
    a) whats the possibilities of my MB being dud, but if it was would it not boot at all?

    b) I have put the maximum memory in that the board will take pc28500 @ 1066Mhz. GB list the memory as being compatible to the board but then manufacturer's do crap like that.

Do you think i maybe should be running PC26400 @ 800Mhz instead?

Yes the cooler on the CPU is stock and according to speed fan all temps are well under and shouldn't be getting stressed at all. (unlike me)

The more I think about this and the more time it consumes the more I think to scrap this board as its "CRAP" and replace with something better and SLI compatible. What are your thoughts here and do I have to go with an Nvidia chipset for SLI?

Look forward to hearing from you mate.

    Russ

Well it is not a dud, just not a great overclocker is all.

You may have better luck using 800Mhz or so on your ram. What exact settings did you try that I suggested? You sure you gave it enough Vcore?

SLI, nope you can get a X58 setup if you like. Several of them are SLI Boards. Other then that all the P35/45 boards are crossfire only. You would have to pick a Nvidia chipset board to use SLI if you do not go X58 and i7
