    Default Can`t run 8 Gb RAM ( 4 x 2 Gb Kingston DRR2-800 ) on GA-MA785GM-US2H

    I have this setup
    Gigabyte GA-MA785GM-US2H(rev. 1.0) (F11 latest bios 05/17/2010)
    AMD Athlon II X2 240 @ 2800 MHz
    ATI Radeon HD 4650
    4 Gb RAM (2 x 2Gd Kingston DDR2-800 PC2-6400)
    Windows 7 Home Premium 64 (6.01.7600)

    tried to install 4 x 2Gd Kingston DDR2-800 PC2-6400 to get 8 Gb
tried to set it as dual channel (ganged) or single channel (unganged) no way to start the system with two barrette on either channel 0 or channel 1

so I`m running 4 GB on slots 1 and 3

when I run PC Wizard 2010 it gives me the flowing readings for the ram

    Manufacturer : Kingston
    Part Number : Unspecified
    Serial Number : ADCCC140
    Type : DDR2-SDRAM PC2-6400 (399 MHz) - [DDR2-800]

    Size : 2048 MB (2 ranks, 8 banks)
    Module Buffered : No
    Module Registered : No
Module SLi Ready (EPP) : No
    Width : 64-bit
    Error Correction Capability (EC... No
    Max. Burst Length : 8
Refresh : Reduced (.5x)7.8, Self Refreshµs
    Voltage : SSTL 1.8v
    Prefetch Buffer : 4-bit
    Manufacture : Week 17 of 2009
    Supported Frequencies : 333 MHz, 400 MHz
    CAS Latency (tCL) : 4 clocks @ 333 MHz, 5 clocks @ 400 MHz
    RAS to CAS (tRCD) : 5 clocks @ 333 MHz, 6 clocks @ 400 MHz
    RAS Precharge (tRP) : 5 clocks @ 333 MHz, 6 clocks @ 400 MHz
    Cycle Time (tRAS) : 15 clocks @ 333 MHz, 18 clocks @ 400 MHz
    Min TRC : 20 clocks @ 333 MHz, 24 clocks @ 400 MHz

do you think it`s an issue of compatibility, the ram, or the MOB ?

    thanks

Hi Kjrad: Run the memory in unganged mode. This is dual channel for multithreaded applications.
Some bad memory can cause it, run memtest86+ on all 4 sticks. If you tested all 4 sticks of memory.
We know that sometimes it is the memory controller which is in the cpu that causes this issue. Also the BIOS settings can cause it. Here are a couple of things you can try in BIOS. First Load Optimized Defaults Save and exit. Try this and see if it works first.
    Code:
    MB Intelligent Tweaker(M.I.T.)
} Advanced Clock Calibration (Note) [Press Enter]
    HT Link Frequency [Auto]
    CPU Clock Ratio [Auto]
    CPU NorthBridge Freq. (Note) [Auto]

    Set Memory Clock [Auto]
    x Memory Clock x4.00 800Mhz
    DCTs Mode (Note) [Unganged]
    } DRAM Configuration [Press Enter]

I tried but the problem persist

PC Wizard give this reading for the Memory Controller:

    Memory Controller : Standard, DIMM
    Number of connectors : 4
Max. Module Size : 3072 MB
Max. Memory Size : 12288 MB
    Supported Speed : 70ns, 60ns, 50ns
    Supported Voltages : 2.9v
Error Detection Method : 64-bit ECC
    Error Correction Capability : None
    Current/Supported Interleave : 1-way/1-way

I hope this is a typo I could understand 1.9v not 2.9v. I suspect a defective cpu memory controller. Which resides in the cpu. Do you have another cpu you can borrow or try?

    it`s not a typo ( it`s a copy and paste )

this CPU have a history of OC (3.5 on water cooling ) so it may be a reason

also my system freeze for no reason (even idle ) since I installed the second barrette of RAM

I`m planing to buy the AMD X6 1050 as it is supported by my MOB although it`s a DDR2

    but not for now

are there any integrity tests for CPUs ?

    any other thoughts ?

    thank you

Yes but not for the dual channel memory controller. Another cpu will tell you right now if that is the issue.
The memory should be set at 1.8v to 2.0v not 2.9v. That motherboard only goes to 2.1v. You may want to go into bios. To PC Health Status and write down the temps and voltages and compare it with PC Wizard. PC Wizard could be incorrect.
    Code:
    PC Health Status
    Hardware Thermal Control [Enabled]
    Reset Case Open Status [Disabled]
    Case Opened No
    Vcore 1.364V
    DDR2 1.8V 1.952V
    +3.3V 3.280V
    +12V 12.048V
    Current System Temperature 38oC
    Current CPU Temperature 36oC
Current CPU FAN Speed 1962 RPM
Current SYSTEM FAN Speed 0 RPM
Current NB FAN Speed 0 RPM
    CPU Warning Temperature [Disabled]
    CPU FAN Fail Warning [Disabled]
    SYSTEM FAN Fail Warning [Disabled]
    NB FAN Fail Warning [Disabled]
    CPU Smart FAN Control [Enabled]
    CPU Smart FAN Mode [Auto]
    System Smart FAN Control [Enabled]

Kingston Tech Support replayed the following

The only information we have is that the AMD Sempron processor does not support 800MHz memory. Only supports 533MHz and 667MHz. Other then that if you can get pairs to work in slots 1 and 3 then it could be a motherboard issue. A bios upgrade would have been the next suggestion but if you already have the latest then it's out of the question. Again if all four modules seem to work in pairs in slots 1 and 3 then it could very well be a motherboard issue. Oh and one more thing, please make sure you have an adequate power supply no less then 650 watts and that it's functioning well. If you have other devices connected to the pc, run the pc bare bones and see if the memory modules work. If they do then it's a power supply issue not generating sufficient power.

If you have any other questions or concerns, please feel free to reply to this e-mail with full email history. Thank you for using Kingston on-line technical support.

    I have 450 Watts
Are you sure? Some power supplies show a maximum of 450Watts, but in fact on a continuous bases run alot less than that. A 450watt PSU is a little week for your system. The quote below is on page 24 of your motherboard manual.
    1/2) ATX_12V_2X4/ATX (2x4 12V Power Connector and 2x12 Main Power Connector)
With the use of the power connector, the power supply can supply enough stable power to all the components on the motherboard. Before connecting the power connector, first make sure the power supply is turned off and all devices are properly installed. The power connector possesses a foolproof design. Connect the power supply cable to the power connector in the correct orientation. The 12V power connector mainly supplies power to the CPU. If the 12V power connector is not connected, the computer will not start.
    • To meet expansion requirements, it is recommended that a power supply that can withstand high power consumption be used (500W or greater). If a power supply is used that does not provide the required power, the result can lead to an unstable or unbootable system.
    • The power connectors are compatible with power supplies with 2x2 12V and 2x10 power connectors. When using a power supply providing a 2x4 12V and a 2x12 power connector, remove the protective covers from the 12V power connector and the main power connector on the motherboard. Do not insert the power supply cables into pins under the protective covers when using a power supply providing a 2x2 12V and a 2x10 power connector.
If the memory works in slot 1 & 3 or in slot 2 & 4 This means it works in all 4 slots, but not at the same time. Then I seriously doupt that it's the motherboard. I believe it's a faulty memory controller which is in the AMD cpu.
