  • P4 WAYYYYY Hot

okay, I was just checking my Moms P4 1.8 temps, amd there was 5alerts that had come up saying it went over 70C! It was throttled all the way back to 1.6ghz and still running 60C+! Its never had any heat problems, and Its 5feet away from mine, and Im running in the high 30C's with my 2100+. the room temp is 25C, her case is 48C! I have no idea at all why its running so hot, its got an intake and exhaust fan, both are runniing, PSU fan is working good. Stock P4 cooler, and its NEVER in 1.5 yrs got this hot. Heres a screeny of Intel Active monitor right after I rebooted it. BTW, Its only got SETI running,,,,nothin else. Everything is running the sdame speeds it always has. Any ideas why the huge increase all the sudden?

    is it stable?

If it was that hot, it wouldn't be stable at all.

Chances are it's just the mb reporting high.

Actualy, those Temps are correct, but its stable. I took my hand by the exhaust, and i Guarantee that air was 50C coming out the back

P4's dont loose stability, they just downclock when runnin gtoo hot. I would suggest removing the HSF and replacing the compound.

U also need more cooling if thats happening. Try adding a more powerful exhaust fan.

My guess would be that the heatsink is blocked up with dust so crack it open and clean the dust bunnies outa there.

              Well, heres the culprit
a 2.5cm layer of dust vertually coverin the heatsink!

              And the temps now

Still high, but i goty some AS3 on the way, and ill put that on their and itll all be good.

Yes, its ALOT of dust, i think im gonna clean it monthly now, so that wont happen again.

BTW, it was pathetic, It took me a minute to figure out how to remove the Heatsink:rolleyes2, since it was the firsty time id really ever messed with a P4 heatsink, I got it though

EDIT: I just nticed, when i cleaned it out, theres was a 700-800rpm increase on the fan speed for it too. Damn dust
