Overclocking an HP?

hey, i'm sittin here with my friend trying to over clock his AMD, here's his specs: It's an AMD XP 1800+ with a palomino core. The bios is not the award-bios, but phoenix bios. He did buy the case as a whole so the motherboard is unknown. We are able to get into his bios but the problem is that it isn't letting us touch any of the features such as setting the FSB speed, voltage etc..My question is this, is there anyway to over-clock this type of proc, mobo combo? I think I read in the tutorial when i O/C'd my amd that some big manufactures don't allow you to OC the processor due to an extreme ammount of service calls saying that they burned up their processor trying to OC it.

Its impossible to OC an HP computer, or anyu prebuilt.

I had a Compaq 500mhz that would not even allow me to get into the BIOS, pressing keys did nothing.

alright, so no OCing his comp. But what if he bought a new motherboard that came with award bios? would that let him change anything?

It is not impossible to overclock a prebuilt but it can be somewhat more of a challenge and you are not likely to gain too much in the way of performance. CPUFSB http://www.podien.onlinehome.de/CPUFSB.HTM works good with my Compaq board. You will need to find out exactly what motherboard is in the machine in order to configure the program properly (assuming that the particular mother board is supported by CPUFSB). If HP's site has no info on what board is installed and there is no info to be gained by looking at the board then Motherboards.org http://www.motherboards.org/ is a good place to research the board in your friend's system. Depending upon what video card is in the system then that too may be overclockable. If you are able to sucessfully overclock that system (or any component within) you should prolly be looking at a cooling solution so as not to cook it.

I don't think you even have access to the BIOS on that system, but rather a configurtion utility of minimal ability.

You can get another motherboard, but if you don't have a proper OS CD, you won't install 1 from the restore CD from HP.

That is specifically designed with the drivers that the HP system needs for the hardware supplied by them.

So, you may well need a mobo & an operating system.

And don't even attempt to boot that HDD that Windows is installed on now with a new mobo ----- the drivers will likely be all wrong and you will get big time errors.

Actually, you can overclock it. I also have an HP in my house, and i wanted to know if u can OC it. So, i emailed Tech support, and they said that the controller that u can currently access is just what Mr. C said, a config utility. But, they said it resides on the CMOS chip, so you can use a flasher (:o ) to reflash the CMOS chip putting the BIOS of choice. He said i would have to fgure out what mobo i have (a FIC AM35), and go to there website and dload one of there BIOS. So, once you do that, its just overclocking it on any other board. Although i owuldnt advise it, becuase it is probably a KT266 board or worse, and the Palminos have been known to be crappy OCers cause of there high temps. Also, if you put your own BIOS on it, then it will void the warranty.

u can Overclock with CPU FSB. Is a good prgram to use . I have a HP and was able to OC to 20MHZ!!!:laugh: :laugh: :laugh:

u wont be able to oc that much cause most HP mobo and ram ar Cr@p.
