  • DirectX 9 Games list?

Does anyone have a list of DirectX 9 Games that are currently out?

  • #2
There aren't too many. I know that Halo does, and I think that Breed (horrible) does as well. Aside from those, I think that's just about it for now. We're really going to see more DX9 stuff in 2004, with HL2, DOOM III, Far Cry, Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow (I'm assuming, I don't know for sure), STALKER, and a few more. I know that UT2004 doesn't, so that's somewhat of a bummer.

Doom III is openGL, but I think you can add Call of Duty to the Dx9 list

Oops, forgot about DOOM III being OpenGL. Stuns me every time I see that. Never thought that OpenGL was capable of so much while maintaining such a stable framerate (DOOM III usually runs around 60-70 fps on top-end cards).

Call of Duty is DX9? I thought that it uses the Quake 3 engine?

          (not included)

Important Note: *Some 3D accelerator cards with the chipset's listed here may not be compatible with the 3D acceleration features utilized by Call Of Duty. Please refer to your hardware manufacturer for 100% DirectX 9.0 compatibility.

*Medal of Honor is based on the Quake 3 engine

            I believe Doom3 is capped at 60FPS...

Yes, although for benchmarks, the framerate cap had been disabled. It's also somewhat annoying that nVidia released a patch that increased performance on DOOM III right before they benchmarked it, whereas ATi cards were retarded by old drivers in the test.

Well, what do you expect from a test that was sponsored by nVidia? ;)

Tomb Raider "The Angel of Darkness" is a DirectX 9 title.

There's also a distinction between games which require DirectX9 to be installed (of which there are a fair few) and games which are capable of DirectX9 effects.

Further, some games like Halo will use whichever DX shader version is supported by your graphics card, so the newer and higher-end your graphics card, the better the effects. For example if you have a Radeon 9800 Pro, Halo uses Pixel Shader 2.0 and the game looks very good. Going all the way back to a GeForce3 for example and it uses Pixel Shader 1.1 effects.

Prince of Persia for example uses DX8 effects, but a DX9 card will run them faster than a DX8 card, although they look equally good.

Finally, some games use some advanced DX9 techniques, but not for all effects. There are options in certain games to enable these effects, but that doesn't make the entire game a "DX9 game".

Pretty much what Persian said. Just because a game needs DX9 to run, doesn't mean it uses any of the DirectX 9 functions that are in all the new cards...

I'm pretty sure that Battlefield: Vietnam will be a DX9 game, seeing as how it uses normal and bump mapping for characters, vehicles, and environments. They're also using an entirely new engine, which should give them plenty of opportunity to use the DX9-specific features.
