  • temps when OC'ing

    Hey guys,

    i was just wondering what around what temps should i try to stay away from with a P4. I disabled my thermal throttledown because it was causing my games to start running quite slow at temps around 60. I have a Volcano 7+, what do you think my ceiling is for overclocking with it. thanks, mike

      That thermal throttledown is there to keep the cpu from frying. Thats like taking the battery out of a smoke detector.

        haha yeah i realized the stupidity in doing it but i didnt think that my temps of around 60 were enough to fry it. But is it? what should i be looking for in a stressed temp?

          for the health of your CPU you really should keep the temp as far below 60C as you possibly can. Considering you are using a decent HSF i would suspect your problem is poor case cooling and/or misapplied TIM. But if you have extremely high ambient temps that could cause a bit of a problem too.

            60C sounds like something is seriously messed up. As mentioned, you've either not applied the thermal grease correctly, or your case had bad airflow. I would reapply the thermal grease (you're using good stuff like artic silver 5, right?) and do the open case test: if your CPU is cooler with the side of the case off, there's not enough air moving through your comp. In that case you're going to have to punch a few more fans in. : peace2: Mista K6

              yeah i agree i have some airflow issues which are causing the high temps. I have two fans on the side panel. One is blowing on the graphics card and the other is an exhaust. I have my psu acting as an exhaust as well, but other than that theres no other fans. I didnt use arctic silver because of my eagerness to get my new computer running. I didnt have any so i used the stuff that came with the hsf. Also im getting around 60 when its stressed not idle. Do you think i should get a better hsf or is mine good enough? Also, do you think that this bad airflow is the reason behind my fsb bottleneck that im having? thanks!

                Well, yah, that combination right there is causing your problems. First off, if your CPU was 60C idle that'd be insane, and your comp would shut down when it got stressed. Usually system air flow brings cool air from the front and exhausts hot air out the back, with side fans as auxiliaries. Do you have a pic of your case or a link to it? Your best bet would be to get at least one 80 or 92mm fan blowing cool air in from the front and another (of the same size) exhausting it out the back, then just leaving one side fan as intake (2 in + 1 out + PSU out = slightly positive air pressure in the case and no dust coming in :thumb: ). Also the thermal grease that comes with the HSF usually sucks, its just there because its a necessity when setting up a HSF. Buy a tube of Arctic silver 5 for ~$7 and that should bring your temps down about 3C. However, you'll notice the most drastic change if change your fans as said before; bad air flow kills a system, especially an overclocked one. Hoped that helped, : peace2: Mista K6

                      Glad I could help :cheers: . Ahhh, I see. Well, it looks like it'd be quite difficult to get a fan into the front of that case without dremmeling the heck out of it. Judging from the pics, I'd say make the two fans on the side BOTH intake, then put a fan in that back slot on exhaust (back is always exhaust), and then you have the PSU on exhaust too. That fan in the back on exhaust will extract all the hot air from around the CPU HSF while the cool air coming in at the bottom will be sucked up to it. I think that'll help you quite a bit. You might want to cut away the screen over the fan in the back though, as it'll really restrict its air flow (never understood why manufacturers but such thick screens). Anyways, that should do it. Put in those fans and reattach your heatsink with some arctic silver 5 and I think you'll see your temps go down quite a bit.. : peace2: Mista K6

                        OK!

                        After my current fan configuration is as follows...

                        One 80 mm fan exhaust in the back (even though a 60 mm is supposed to fit there ) one 80 mm up in the front as an intake, 2 on the side panel as intakes and a blower above the graphics card trying to blow on the cpu. I cant get the arctic silver till the weekend. My temps now max at around 57. What are your thoughts? I figured i didnt need the blower on the graphics card cuz it has those 2 side fans flowing on it, but im not sure if the blower is cooling the cpu or just being sucked out the exhaust...


                        oh and i noticed that when i start the sandra burn test (using the arithmetic test, thats what i used to check the high temp) the temperature would jump up around 10 degrees almost instantly. Is that whats supposed to happen?

                            yeah i know what you mean wiggo, i think ive got my airflow a bit better, i just need to get the new thermal paste and see how my cpu temps are from there. im thinking of adding the top blow hole but as buying a new case is concerned, i just bought this one so i cant buy a new one.

                              you know i was wondering...

                              my case has a lot of vents and holes, would it be better for the airflow if i sealed the holes so that air could only flow from and out of the fans?
