  • OC older hardware for better gaming [merged]

HI, right now my specs are 800mhz, 512 RAM, 24* dvd/cd rom, ATI 7000 radeon.

I was wondering If there was a way to overclock my system so I can get better performance for this game I got, CNC GENERALS:EA.

    Which runs OK right now.
But would be much better if I could get it to this.

    1.8ghz.

    Nvidia Ge Force3?

If there's any other info you need, plase ask I have a CPU-Z program that gives any info you might need.

If I don't reply right away I will soon gotta pick the kids up from school.

Well full system specs would help but with that videocard.

#1 Check that your motherboard supports it.
      #2 Buy a better videocard.

I had one of those before(vivo model). If yours is the sdr model, it will be real bad with performance on par with a tnt2. But it is a dx8 card. Thats dx8, not dx8.1, not dx7.
Anyway if it is actively cooled, with radeonator available at www.guru3d.com , you may get a 5-20% oc from it. I got one of those to oc to 171/171 from 143/143sdr with no artifacts. Sounds sad, but 20% makes alot of difference with a corosponding 25% increase in 3dmark 2001se score(from 900something to 1238) and very noticable better gameplay.

these threads really should have been put together since you're after the same outcome, and please consider a better thead title next time. "Help Please!" just isn't very descriptive now is it?

What brand of 800mhz? What mobo? What type of ram? Does the r7000 have active cooling? Is it pci or agp? What other cooling do you have?
Then I can give some ocing advice.(maybe)

There´s hope. I can see that you dont want to buy new hardware so I´ll skip the "get new hardware man"- talk. Post more detailed specs, exact name of mobo, cpu and ram. Im not really an expert but I think in this case its most about the motherboard, since its proboably a few years old (it all comes down to the bios settings available). Im wrighting this on a P3 450@566 and Im currently playing alot of cod (call of duty) and its fine in multiplayer. Check www.overclockers.com and see what your cpu/mobo is good for. I´ve overclocked alot of OLD computers (last being a celeron 766@1250something. (its the highest overclock for that cpu posted on overclockers.com)) So, more specs plz, and you will learn alot from just reading old reviews of your hardware on "techfreaks"-sites. Google your hardware.

But then again.. if you dont fell for reading, get a new lowcost graphiccard like radeon9200 and you´ll be "in the game" for a few month more.

I wrote a review on the comparison of a ATI Radeon 7000 and a Nicely priced Mid-grade ATI Radeon 9600 Pro. Like benchmarks, and prices. Might help.

You can see it at http://www.hybrid-mods.tk

Well forget overclockin' the CPU as Compaq's arn't made for it (and there are more ppl askin' about overclockin' name brand PC's in this forum than ya can poke a sick a but the answers are still the same) but programs such as SoftFSB or CPUFSB may get ya a slight overclock but limited due to no voltage changes can be made.
