Do i just use a Router, if so do i need to hook up the net to the router??? Or can i play over a lan??

If you have a router, you're in good shape. You need a pair of cat5 ethernet cords (same thing you might use for a cable modem). If you want, you can hook up to the net (no reason not to), but you don't need to. Just plug the two computers into the router and it should work just fine.
If you don't already have a router, it's even easier. Just get a crossover cable (looks like a cat5 cable, you can buy it for pretty cheap). You plug it into both computers and it should work. If you're using XP (and I assume you are), you might need to go through the Network Setup Wizard. To do so, just go to the Start menu, Settings, Control Panel, Network Connections. Click Network Setup Wizard. You should be able to figure it out from there. You might not even need to do this anyway.
For future problems, try to put stuff like this in Internet and Networking, rather than Windows. -
