can anybody tell me how to get into the bios on an ASUS laptop?
it won't boot at all and says "windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
    <Windows root>\system32\hal.dll
Please re-install a copy of the file.
I want to boot from the Windows CD, but none of the usual keys work

Have you tried putting the CD in, then rebooting to see if it will boot from the CD, then use the repair option?

I don't think you can do what you need to do from the BIOS, unless you're resetting your boot order, but most have some option (usually you hit the "delete" or F2 keys during POST)

      Hi there,

I brought a A2500H laptop today, and i'm having major problems.
Did you sort your problem out jennyb?

When i brought the new machine home, put the battery in, mouse etc fired it up. No problems, i installed some bundled software that came with it, then shut it down by pressing the power button for 4 secs or so.

Later on- i had turned it back on, and it loaded up windows xp fine.
I left it untended for about 5-6 minutes when the screen went blank.
I thought the powersaving feature kicked in. So when i pressed a random key nothing happened, i tried again and again.

I had a look in the brief manual, no trouble shooting page.
I tried pressing the power button- no change. The power led light and optical mouse light was still on. It just appeared the screen was out.

So i shut down the laptop as i did before, i think it was unresponsive the first time, so i tried holding down the power button again until it sucessfully shut down.

When i powered it up again the led light came on only to disappear seconds later. I cant even open the dvd drive.

Anyone with some advice or ideas as to what has happened? much appreciated.

      Cheers,

      Rustrydude

Re: ASUS A2500H laptop - bios

        Rustydude,

It sounds like you're having the same problem I had once. I had just updated my BIOS and my A2500 would power-up, make a weired (half beep) noise, then power-down. The BIOS that I had upgraded to did not accept PC2700 (333 MHz) memory. Fortuniatly, my sisters A2500 had PC2100 (266 MHz) memory, so I used her memory to boot and down-grade back to the old BIOS. It works fine now, and I'm still running PC2700 memory.

Do you know what memory you have? What BIOS version? (Unfortuniatly you can't check the BIOS version now)

If you have PC2100 memory, try removing and resetting it. If this doesn't work, then you might have to send it in for repair.

        Hope this helps.

          Hi in there!

I have an Asus A2500H and I want to expand its memory. But how can I access the SO-DIMM slot?

Where it is? Under the keyboard ?

At my local notebook store, an "expert" tried for an hour without results...

          Thanks for your help

The memory acess is Usualy under the keyboard of a laptop, though some manufacturers do not allow easy upgrades by hiding it or not having one period, You may have to take the bottom off in order to get the memory slots.
