  • Dell Dimension 2400

Hey, my friend has one of these Dell 2400. He wants to upgrade to a new mobo so he can have AGP. It's a 2.4ghz. Any possibility that this is a socket 478? I checked the manual and that big ass stupid book didn't tell me!!!

It's a socket 478 alright but if you replace the mainboard with another that is not a Dell product then you'll also have to replace the PSU as Dell uses non-standard wiring setup from the PSU to the mainboard (it looks the similar to normal setups but it isn't).

Not on all models actually, I have one of the exceptions to that and my Dell had a regular PSU like you'd find in any computer. I have a Dimension 4550 533mhz FSB.

JD53887: Have you replaced the motherboard yet? Do you need to replace PSU also? If yes, what PSU you bought?

I was googling for info on replacing the mobo on a 2400 and found this page. Same problem - no AGP slot, need graphics solution. jd, any word on how you solved it? what mobo, what psu (if any), problems encountered during installation?

            Thanks in advance.

one option is install a pci card in the slot next to the connectors which is on irq 10 i believe. i think there is, if i'm not mistaken, an option in the bios to disable the on- board video.

                Re: Dell Dimension 2400

I've got a dell 2400 and am looking at upgrading the mobo. I'd like to keep the p4 (2.4) and pc3200 memory, but want an agp or pci express. What are my options? What are some good companies to buy from? What type of mobo do I have? What size is the mobo? What psu can fit and what company should I buy it from. ANY HELP WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED!!!

                  Re: Dell Dimension 2400

Well with a socket 478 you wil NOT find a PCI-E motherboard, so AGP is your only option there... I believe the 2400 is MicroATX form factor so your going to need a similar MicroATX motherboard. I am really not an Intell guy so I couldnet tell you much else sorry.

                    hello,

i too have a dell dimension 2400 , i have upgraded my video and ram , i now have 384 MB RAM and a CHAINTECH GeForce FX5200 with 256MB DDR RAM, that is the best card i could find for the price , when someone said that you have to put the card in the pci slot next to the connectors , what does that mean? does it maximize the capabilities or does it recieve more power. another question , how do i disable the onboard graphics in my BOIS , because i cant find it , plus it has this regulator that takes like 1 MB from my ram to help it , or i can choose 8 MB , what is this? its kinda vexing knowing that the RAM i bought isnt up to its potential. What i did do was i disabled and uninstalled the driver for it , so it no longer works , or thats what i think.

Any Suggestions would be VERY helpful ,

                    Thanks.

A pci gfx card goes in the pci slot closest to the cpu(on an atx mobo).

Also for anyone planning to change mobo and psu just to get an agp slot, if you are going to run a low end agp card like a r9200se or a fx5200, then you are wasting your money and should just get the pci version of the above cards as the performance of them is similar to their agp counterparts.

I have the same dell and video card. I did try different ports for the video and they all work about the same. That stupid problem with the bios trying to reinstall the onboard video is anoying and I can't seem to fix it either. I have the same thing going on with my sound card.
