Screwed up comp

It goes like this... I started up HL2 and the hl2 icon goes blank. I restart but I get an error saying the system/config (something like that) is missing or corrupted. When I get to recovery windows asks me " which windows installation would you like to log on?". The problem is though I dont know what I should put there. I tried 0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9 but it doesn't do anything useful and repeats the message.

Ok, are you trying to recover windows using the install disk? If so, you might need to just reinstall windows completely. If you are worried about your data, just install over the old install, only installing drivers you need for your cd/dvd-rom, save what you need to save to disc, and then do a complete reinstall with reformat. Long and drawn out process, but usually worth it in the end. I personally have never had any luck with the system recovery option and always had to do the above anyway.
