  • GA-X48T-DQ6, RAID causes BSOD

I heard this was the "official" Gigabyte forum so I'll try asking here and sorry if this has been answered before but I've never found a straight answer.

I recently got a GA-X48T-DQ6 and it works excellent but today my two new discs arrived 2x 750gb Samsung discs and I wanted to try using raid 0 on them. The problems first occurred when I tried booting up after installing them, windows just hang on startup -> flashed a bluescreen -> rebooted, did not even start in safe mode. So I tried to re-install windows vista ultimate x64 but the setup said "no discs meet the criteria" even if they weren't raided and even the unraided ones would work. After some fiddling I noticed that it was caused by enabling RAID in BIOS, you didn't even have to use raid on them just enabling the function would cause the BSOD.

I mailed Gigabyte about this but anyone know how to solve it?

    Thanks in advance.

P.S. Gigabyte should get a real official board :)

    Re: GA-X48T-DQ6, RAID causes BSOD

Well for starters it matters which ports you plug the disks into as to which changes/places you enable RAID in the BIOS and which RAID Drivers you will need to install during OS install.

The Yellow/Orange Ports are controlled Via the Intel ICH9R Controller, and the Purple Ports are controlled Via the Gigabyte/J.Micron Controller. GA controller is faster in my tests, but that is all variable to everyone since all disks are different and other factors. So up to you which to use, if you have time and patience test both. See below for BIOS settings Per controller

With vista you need to use the Load Driver Button before it will see your disk/RAID array.

But before any of that will work you must have the correct settings enabled in the BIOS per which Ports you have the disks plugged into.

The Disk Settings are at the Top of the Integrated Peripherals Section for the Intel Controller, and in the Middle are the settings are for the Gigabyte/J.Micron Controller as shown in the image below >>>

For the Intel Ports you will need to have the 2 disks plugged into the Yellow Ports, and you will need to set this in the Integrated Peripherals page at the top as shown above >>>>

For RAID on Intel ICH9R (Yellow)
    SATA RAID/AHCI Mode__________ [RAID]
    SATA Port0-3 Mode____________ [Enabled]

For the Gigabyte/J.Micron Controller you will need both Disks plugged into the 2 purple ports. RAID 0 Only, and you will use these settings, towards the middle of the Integrated Peripherals page as shown above >>>>

For Raid 0 On GA/J.Micron Chip (Purple)
    Onboard SATA/IDE Device___________ [Enabled]
    Onboard SATA/IDE Ctrl Mode_________ [RAID/IDE]

And after you set this, enter the Raid Creation BIOS and Create a RAID array, then reboot back into BIOS and in the Advanced BIOS page you will need to set first boot device to your RAID array

As for getting a BSOD that sounds like another issue, you should just either not be able to install a OS or Not see the disks if you have the ports and BIOS settings mixed up.

BSOD is likely some other issue such as incompatible ram, or improper settings in the MIT Section. Or a Combination of both. If you need help with this after getting your OS installed let me know, Or if you need help with this first so you can get your OS installed without a BSOD let me know as well. If you would like to address this first please post your full specs.

Good luck, and please feel free to post back anytime and sorry for the delay in getting back to you.

    P.S. Gigabyte Boards Rock!!!!

Sounds like you just need to get used to it and get setup and you will have a different Opinion

      Re: GA-X48T-DQ6, RAID causes BSOD

Thanks for the quick and great reply. I'll try some more when I get home.

I had the discs plugged into the orange SATA 3 and 4 I think but the showed up nicley in the RAID utility and I could even raid them. They also showed up nicley in win vista installation but they didn't meet vistas critera. Neither did the Velociraptor disc I wanted to put vista on. Win xp installation bsoded almost directly. So I fiddled around, changing back to the old hardware, removed the disc but the problem was still there as long as I had RAID activated (the Intel raid but I had SATA Port 0-3 native mode disabled thou).

In the end I noticed that it was the RAID that caused it so I disabled it and was able to install vista like before.

Anyway I'll try those settings that you suggested and see if it works otherwise I guess its the RAM which isn't in Gigabytes supported vendor list. The RAID will be used mostly for storage since have all apps/windows/games on my Velociraptor disc.

      P.S I agree with you, but I meant board=forum :D

        Re: GA-X48T-DQ6, RAID causes BSOD

Ahh well that sounds like you had the correct BIOS settings loaded you just need to click on the Load Driver Button on the vista disk install screen and load the correct driver. Can be loaded right off your Motherboard CD or a USB stick. Native Disabled was likely the cause of the raptor not being seen and the XP failure as well. Sounds like you was trying to many things all at once.

Ya once you get home with the above info you should get both installed if you planned to do that, Vista and XP I mean.

If you are just trying to load a RAID Storage then you can set that up right inside windows with the matrix storage manager after you install a OS. The above settings would not be correct for this though. Those are meant for a RAID OS

Ahh yeah, that would be nice to have real Official Support.

          Re: GA-X48T-DQ6, RAID causes BSOD

ICH9R in AHCI/RAID mode has different personality (and device id) than ICH9R in IDE mode, and naturally does require different driver.

One way to do the switch for already installed system is to install the RAID driver, and activate the RAID mode in BIOS before Windows reboots. Works at least with XP. See HOWTO: enable AHCI mode after installing Windows - PC Perspective Forums

            Re: GA-X48T-DQ6, RAID causes BSOD

So I'll do this when I get home:
            1. Plug my discs into the purple SATA connectors
            2. Enter BIOS and change
            Onboard SATA/IDE Device___________ [Enabled]
            Onboard SATA/IDE Ctrl Mode_________ [RAID/IDE]
            3. Hope Windows will start
            4. install a RAID manager in windows.

But is Intel® Matrix Storage Manager only for ICH9R or does it work with GA/J.Micron as well?

Like I said, I'm not used to dealing with RAID :)

              Re: GA-X48T-DQ6, RAID causes BSOD

Yeah, that is how you would connect 2 disks for RAID Setup with the GA controller. You will need to load the Gigabyte drivers during OS install.

No Intel drivers at all for those ports. No need to install anything IN windows, just the pre-install driver is all, use the "Load Driver" button on vista install to browse the CD for the GA RAID Driver. It will be one named similar to this >> GBB36X. It will be in this folder >>> ROOT:\Other\GSATA\Floppy32

You can if need be also Copy the files using the program GA made to a USB Stick or floppy from going into this folder >>> Root:\BootDrv and run the .exe named Menu, then select the Gigabyte RAID Driver. Not so sure if this will copy to USB but it is made for and will to floppy.

Then you are done, yes there is a Raid Manager for windows but it does nothing but show you the name of disks and such. Useless for any real purposes

Thanks again for your fast replys. But do I really need to reinstall windows again if I'm just going to use it for storage? Windows is already istalled nicely on my raptor disc which wont be in a raid.

Anyway I'll try setting it up as soon as I get home and give some feedback later.

Plugged the drives into the purple sata connectors. Switched SATA/IDE ctrl mode to IDE/RAID. Used the utility to raid them and it started just fine. Formated them with windows disk manager :)

Weird thing happened yesterday. I was transfering large files from a WD my book 320gb (external hdd) and watched a movie from the raided disc at the same time. The computer bluescreened twice with stop 0x00024, ntfs.sys - something error, the I rebooted and everything was fine. googled around but everyone that had that error was more or less unable to boot at all.

Maybe I was using the disc to much during the process or the FAT32 (external) -> ntfs caused the problem or just memory fault?

Did google return Error message in Windows 2000: "Stop 0x24" or "NTFS_FILE_SYSTEM" ? (Did for me.)
Even if old, that page seems to list some causes and possible fixes.

Good to see you have no bad sectors or something like that!

It was likely just a glitch between the ntfs and FAT transfer due to speed or format differences. Why is your WD in FAT32? IS that just how they are made? Can you make it NTFS, if so it would be better
