  • Building my first computer. need some help

I know a bit about computers. NOT ALOT. Not enough to where If I ran into a problem in the BIOS or something id know what to do. Im hoping I have no problems and I can just plug everything in and install my OS and have a new computer ha.

Heres what the build is gona be.

    CPU: Intel E8400 (169.99)

    GPU: ATI 4850 (184.99)

    RAM: 4GB DDR2 800 (90.00)

    Mobo: Gigabyte GA-EP45-DS3R (134.99)

    PSU: Corsair HX520 (114.99)

HD: 500-750 GB Sata II, 7200 RPM (99.99)

    DVD: NEED TO FIND ONE(99.99)

    Case: Antec 900 (99.99)

Acer black 22" Display Monitor (199.99)

Ive never attempted to build a computer before. My reason for the new build is because I run a recording studio and need a new flawless computer for pro-tools, and I want to be able to run a new game "warhammer online" flawlessly.

I dont even know where to start as far as putting it together ha. I have "some kind of clue" but as far as going into BIOS and messing with stuff, im really hoping I dont have to do that until I OC it to 4.

Some tips or something? I will be ordering all parts on friday.

Ahh just wondered. Here is my two suggestions if you would like for better ram >>>

        Newegg.com - mushkin 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory - Desktop Memory

        Newegg.com - G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory - Desktop Memory

        Newegg.com - G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1000 (PC2 8000) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory - Desktop Memory

Just better I say because of personal experience with these brands

DVD burners can be had at newegg for $25-30 with lightscribe even. There is a Samsung one for sale now with free shipping even at $25.99 >>>
Newegg.com Newsletter - Garmin GPS Sweepstakes, $25.99 SAMSUNG DVD Burner with LightScribe, and more!

I always grab Asus ones and they are normally 25 or so as well, why do you have $99 up there for DVD?

Re: Building my first computer. need some help

            I see

I'd just call em 30 apiece and make it 60ish! But I guess that is up to you, Most brands have decent ones though you should look at the comments there as well. You may want to spend more for your drives then 25-30, I guess it depends on how much you use them and for what.

I have about 5 Asus $27 I think drives here and they have been fine for almost 2 years now and I use the lightscribe on them often.

But I guess if you burned alot of cd's everyday you may want a more expensive one.

Hey, at least you get to shop newegg!

Personally I'd go for at least a 620W PSU.

500W is more than enough for that system. The Corsair HX520 is quite strong.
                GIgabyte GA-990FXA-UD3
                AMD FX8120 @ 4GHz
                Patriot 1866MHz EL series 2X4GB DDR3
                Powercolour HD 6970 2GB w/XFX 8800GT 512MB Hybrid PhysX
Creative X-FI titanium HD w/Technics class A 300W amp and tower speakers
                PC P&C 500W PSU
                2TB Seagate
Coolermaster 690II w/Corsair H100 tucked under the hood

Yes it is quite strong but I'd still go for the next up.

Re: Building my first computer. need some help

I agree with the PSU upgrade wayout suggested... its always good to have a little room to expand, cuz you know eventually your gonna get tempted to stick in another GPU or something like that...

Id also second the change in RAM brands... although Corsair is some top quality RAM, it seems to run better on nForce based boards than intel ones, so for intel chipsets, i like Kingston RAM, however ive heard both Patriot and G skill run really well.

also, what brand is that HD 4850 you wanna stick in? if you havent decided yet, let me recommend HIS, PowerColor or Saphire... i went with a couple HIS cards because of the memory performance (ive got mine perfectly stable at 1065 with stock voltages where other seem to fail at anything over 1050), and i like the Saphire card because ive heard the core overclocks really well without having to do any hardmods.

as for the DVD drive... Asus 20x SATA DL burner with LightScribe for $29... im sure you could get one even cheaper now

with the dvd drive, that will run both dvds and like cds? sry if this is a dumb question. Like say i have a game i wana install that drive will read the disks.. like that as well as DVDS right?

yeah just about any modern DVD drive is backwards compatible, so you really shouldnt have to spend more than $35 for a decent one.
