  • P35-DS3P Sata Burner AHCI?

I have a problem that just started in past week. My Sata burners will not allow burns in AHCI mode and also when opening drive the tray opens then slams shut again before can put in disk. Have tried now 3 dif burners that all work fine on other system and also work in ATA mode. After contacting tech support their answer was that AHCI mode will not allow optical drives. But this does not happen on other systems with Sata burners and they worked just fine for past year on this board. What could have happened to start this and how can I fix? Tks for any help.

Well you could always put the CD/DVD drive onto the opposite controller from your OS AHCI Setup. Like if you have the OS installed on the Intel Controller (Yellow Ports) plug your CD/DVD into the Gigabyte Controller (Purple Ports) or Visa Versa

You would of course need to enable the Gigabyte Ports or Intel ones in the BIOS if you are not using them right now

Other then that, I would suggest maybe you update your Intel Chipset package, or if you just did and this maybe caused the issue revert to the older one

Using on purple ports now. As to drivers nothing has changed in months. Forgot this happens on both Vista SP1 and XP Pro SP3. Harddrives are working normal.

Well Like I said then I would try moving your CD/DVD drive to the other controller. Purple ports for what? Your system or the trouble drives?

If you are using them on separate (Like OS on Yellow, CD on purple) be sure you do nto have AHCI set on the one the CD drives are on. There is 2 Disks settings in the BIOS, top for Intel, middle for GA. Only one needs to be set to AHCI, the one with your system.

          Re: P35-DS3P Sata Burner AHCI?

Hard drives on yellow set to AHCI and cd drives had to move to purple set to ATA. But was working normal on yellow in AHCI since June of last year then one morning when turned on system I went to make a DVD and would not burn. It had worked the night before. Thought was burner so put in new drive and still no joy. Try both drives in my XPS 420 and worked fine. Back on Gigabyte system no work. So support said could only run in ATA mode as chipset does not support Sata optical drives in AHCI mode even though is not a problem in several other systems have built including this till now. Just would like to know what could have caused this. Is the Sata controller failing?

Not sure, it does sound funny since you had no issues until that day.

I would think it is/was a driver issue more then a board/chipset issue. Maybe some random driver got corrupted on a shutdown?

I know you dont plan to do a clean install, but I would think the next time you do that it would work out like before

YA, Nice you use Ghost. You could ghost today, and reinstall if the past ones do not work as expected.

Hey, how you do use Ghost with SATA drives? Or do you mean the NON DOS kinda Ghost?

I still call it Ghost but is Norton Save & Restore 2.0 I got last year. Same as Ghost but without extra stuff don't need. It sees the Sata drives without using f6 in AHCI and also can boot to it to run older Ghost 9 images.

                    Ahh OK.

Ya, I wish Ghost 2003 worked! I used to love it for IDE drives, I have a DOS 1.44 disk copy that works wonders, but IDE only as there is no 16bit SATA or RAID driver for it to work in DOS.

Nice, I may have to look into getting a copy of that then. So it is installed within the system, but can also be used in DOS? How about with RAID as well as AHCI I noticed you said that but dont want to assume RAID As well

Ya, I looked it up, but see no mention of AHCI, SATA or RAID

But since you use it with SATA I think I might try it out

Just remembed something else about the DVD drives. When booting and you pause at the screen where it shows irq and such if in ATA mode and you open the drive tray it will stay open till you close but in AHCI then will close as soon as you open it. Won't even give enough time to put in a disk. That is one way I know is not working normal.

Works great. I use it on XPS420 after booting first time and make sure get updates and install just the drivers and basic stuff I really want to be there and put on external drive so if anything goes wrong will not lose that. I also used to put onto a new drive and have the original dell install there then took out original Dell HD and put away.

Yeah does sound buggy. Please post back if you do decide to try out those Ghost images, let us know how it goes.

Thanks, I think I may pick up a copy of it then. Hey, you never said, does it have a DOS bootable interface to use to ghost images onto clean drives?
